Hello All,

Please excuse my ignorance if this was discussed elsewhere on this forum, I am brand new to the FJ40 community and got my hands on an all original 1973 FJ40 a couple weeks ago and I am in the process of bringing it back to its former glory (with some improvements of course).

The question I have today is regarding locks. All the locks are the originals, but I was only given the keys to the ignition and seems that the door lock on the driver door and the rear lift door (3 doors, 2 swing out, 1 swings up) have a different size key (lock has a little swivel door that covers the key hole).

First Question: Did these locks share the same key, or did each lock have a key unique to it?

Second Question: Any idea of where I might be able to find a key for these locks? the 4 digit key code starts with a 6 and apparently there were a series of different patterned keys throughout the years which these codes identified the key pattern but I can't find one to match the key code on my locks.

If the keys were unique to each lock I may as well just buy new locks with keys and be done with it but if the original locks shared the same key then I would rather pay the premium for a locksmith to create a key so i don't have to have 3 different keys to 1 vehicle.

Thanks in advance for your help, I'm new to the FJ40 so its all a learning experience at this point.

I have a 74 and it is keyed as following:

Ignition key - ignition and fuel door (which I think you don’t have)
Driver’s door - separate key
Rear hatch - separate key

The door/hatch key is NLA from Toyota unfortunately. You will probably need to go to an old school locksmith that has a big collection of keys.

Okay, so no matter which way I go it looks like I will always need 3 unique keys. I do have the locking fuel door, but the ignition key works on that surprisingly. Thanks for the info. I think its cheaper for me to just buy the new locks than I would expect a locksmith to charge to reverse engineer 2 different keys to the original locks.

I have an ORIGINAL 1969 and ignition key fits back hatch and drivers door. I believe one key for all was original.

Generally the door and ignition should match. The rear is a different key.
#2 Toyota keys are still available #6 are not.

Its easy to repin the locks yourself. If you have two locks with the same number in the same place you can leave those pins and remove the other two. Before removing the center cylinder from the outer case put everything in a large (2 gallon) plastic bag. When everything flys out they will be in the bag. When reassembling be sure to do it in the bag also. Dont ask me how I know. I repinned my door lock and now I can use that key in my door. Still have not looked at the hatch lock to see if it can be repinned so I can have one key for everything.

Example
Ign lock, 6843
Door lock, 6753

Just remove the 7 and 5 pins then the ign key will work the door lock. The ign, door and hatch locks were available new. They cost me about $80.

Hmm, There is no way that my ignition key would fit in the door lock, the ignition key for mine is the traditional key double-sided key (picture attached). While the driver door and rear hatch have a smaller single-sided key (picture also attached)

Mine is an 81...but one key for ignition, both front doors and gas lock...but the rear is a #6 key on the Ambulance doors.

I bought the ignition/door lock set from racer65 for my 77 and surprisingly the key works for my gas lock. Different lock and keys for the amby doors which I also bought OEM I believe.

Was thinking 74 was first year for column switch. Mine is a 72 and hope 1 key fits everything.

It’s funny that you can buy the lock mechanism and key but just can’t buy a key lol (unless it starts with a 2). Guess the OEM locks are all keyed with a 2 key.
Oddly enough, a couple months ago I bought a new dash mount ignition switch for my '64 and the keys are #6...

Apparently an aftermarket key can be special ordered. Ilco TA2 is apparently the equivalent to the #6 key (matched the pattern for #6 on SOR) that is so difficult to find. Problem is my local locksmith wants me to buy 15-20 keys as he can't order just one from the distributor and he charges $8 dollars a key. I'm just buying new locks with #2s SMH

New OEM locks received, got a #4 lock for the driver door and a #6 lock for the rear lift door :cautious: both installed fairly quick but I'm going to take the old driver door cylinder to the lock smith to see if it can be re-pinned to match the new rear #6 door lock since i now have two #6 keys so they can use the same keys.

Where'd you end up getting your keys/cylinders from?

So I’m in the key world now as I never lock my FJ40, but with my FJ45 if someone gets cute and locks the doors (and of course they can close after locking) then I’m stuck as there is no other way to enter without locksmith help or removal of doors/glass. The 40 has a non-locking rear so I can always enter that way if necessary, but not the 45.

I picked up a lock from @cims1970fj40 with a key that will be my 45’s door lock now :bounce::bounce2:but I got looking at the other locks I have in hand without keys. If I have the number of the lock, say 3412, and I can find a #3 key (I know, they’re NLA except used) can a key maker then make the 3412 key from that code? I am (key)clueless wrt keys. @ToyotaMatt?
