FJ40 1976 Clutch issue

Went out to start my 1976 FJ40 at 0 degrees. The clutch had pressure when pushed to the floor twice. Then no pressure...the spring pulls the pedal back up but no other pressure. Not sure what the deal is any help would be great. I replaced the clutch last year. Can this freeze? It will start as it was in neutral when this happened.
 
Check your reservoir see if there is any fluid in there.....or you could have some air in the lines

BennettFJ40, that sucks man! :frown:

Could be a few things. Moisture in the brake fluid could have caused failure of a seal(s) due to expansion in the freezing weather. Or, a leaky connection could be allowing air into the clutch slave/master system. Or, the slave cylinder, or the master cylinder may be failing.

My suggestion would be to bleed the master/clutch line/slave cylinder with fresh brake fluid as a first step to diagnosing this problem.

As it turns out, the previous owner "fixed" the slave cylinder with electrical tape which my lose it's sealing properties somewhere above -5°F.

I got the rebuild kit from Cruiser Outfitters and the piston is clearly for a different slave cylinder. I wonder if my slave cylinder is original or not since this rig is so old but otherwise unmodified. The bore of the cylinder is totally smooth with no pitting or scoring and the piston looks good, too. My boot was destroyed but I think that's all I need. I think the blow out may have been water in the hydraulic line that froze and expanded.

Can any of you experts out there tell me if this slave cylinder looks like a '65? Would a later model slave cylinder that is more readily available bolt in place?

I'm pretty desperate to get this rolling again since I'm getting married in a week and won't have as much time to devote to working on the rig (not that I'll mind the new addition to the household:D).
 
Sorry to hear that isn't the right kit. I'm out of the office through Monday (Bryce and the boys are there) but I did confirm the 04313-35011 is the correct kit for E-66 model. So either the kit is mis-labeled or your slave is a different year? Can you measure the bore diameter of your cylinder? Should be easy for us to correct once we know what you have in there.
 
Look for fluid. If none under the slave it's ok. If it's not leaking and nothing broke of fell out it's the master bad. Look up under dash-most likely will see seepage there if it's bad. Pretty sure newer year slave will work. I used different years on master too. Think newer lc and P/u is 3/4 vs 13/16"

You're awesome, Kurt! The bore on my slave is 7/8" and the piston in the kit is 11/16". I'll give Bryce a call and see what we can figure out.

When I found the dead clutch, there was no fluid on the firewall or outside of the master cylinder, nor the hose. I'm replacing the old cracked hose anyway. I'm pretty sure the taped up slave with no boot along with moisture in the line was the culprit.

I'm curious if the OP has found the source of his problem.
