Can someone post a more detailed description of the trail head, or a map?
Thanks from the NEWB.

If your asking about the meeting place, take I-17 north from Phx. to Cordes Junction, take the exit towards Prescott on 69 when you get to Mayer look for a Circle K with a bunch of cruisers. There is only one in town according to their site.

This trail is on my to do list too, but there were several FJCs and other stockers that wanted to come on this run, I'm guessing this trail change counts them out? It doesn't look like a trail for a newbe in a new stock truck that wants to keep their shinny paint?:frown:

To ask a newbie question, will a stock FJ Cruiser with stock tires be able to make this trip?? Thanks.

Regards,

Miguel

That would depend on your seat time and tolerance level for scratches and possible damage. I've done similar trails with little seat time, but I was with more experienced drivers to spot me. I have a HIGH tolerance for scratches and dents.

Not so any longer. Recently the brush was cut while a volunteer did some trail repairs.

I've heard of many stock rigs running this trail. Their lines were less aggressive and only rarely was someone strapped. A stock FJ or 100 or H3 or something capable should have no issue.

And there will be excellent spotters and drivers on this trip. The one tippy/dangerous spot can be bypassed. Here's some info from another post:

"First off I'd like to say, I would not rate this trail a 4.0, maybe a 3.5-. We aired down just outside of cleator and planned to run the trail backwards towards Senator highwway. Desoto mine was interesting, Large hole in the side of the mountain, filled with water. If you climb over the baracade you can see that the main has a fork in it leading to the right. The water appeared to be VERY deep. The Tippy section that followed was not tooo bad. A little freaky climbing a ledge which makes the passenger hang sideways towards the edge of the road. The road was not flat but off camber, leaning towards the bottom of the hill. The tj's had a small scare but poor Rod with his 9" of lift was really leaning over the trail (yikes). Charles wells describes the trail with Very steep desends and climbs. Didn't really see that. The trail is 80% up or down a mountain and very rocky. The trail was fairly tame in my book. We stopped at the goat ranch for lunch. Its just a collaped building with cow truffes and a windmill. Afterwards we entered a rocky wash. Had to do a little crawling. The book made mention that a Stock TJ gets hung up in this section and well, one did on our trip also. No fatalities, no damage. We reached senator highway at 4pm. Brett and Brandon wanted to get home early and decided to take senator into Mayer and head home from there. Myself, Keith, and Rod headed into crown king for a burger. Since it happened to be super bowl weekend (what's a football team?), there were some good specials in Crown king. Like $1.00 draft beers. I never knew they had 6 beers on tap up there ;) We ate a good 1/2 burger, watched Rod's boy Armin shoot some pool and headed home. It was a good trip, again NOT a 4.0 trip by no means."

Good to hear!:D

I'll be there in my '87 Toy, the SloYota.

I've lead groups over this trail the last 4 years in the fall. To avoid any problems I've always posted minimum requirements:

As with any off highway excursion, damage is possible.

1. I've always required a rear locker and 31" tires as a minimum to make the trip. The trail can be run without a rear locker, but it certainly helps a lot of tire spin on some of the hill climbs.

2. Sliders are optional, but sure help on stock height rigs.

3. Stock "P" rated tires are not a good idea.

A little history of the area:

Fish's manuscript gives the following account of the fight with the Indians, known as the “Battle Flat” fight. Fish says that this account was taken from a manuscript shown him by Judge Brooks in Prescott in 1900, giving the whole details of the fight. It varies somewhat from the account given by Hamilton in his work, “The Resources of Arizona,” and I am of the opinion that it is the true version, for the reason that it was taken from an original manuscript owned by Judge Brooks, whom all settlers in Prescott will remember as reliable in all respects. The account is as follows:

“In the latter part of May, 1864, Stewart Wall, Frank Binckley, DeMorgan Scott, Samuel Herron and Fred Henry, started from Walnut Grove on a prospecting trip. They took three pack animals and a good supply of provisions. They took their time passing the Hassayampa and Turkey Creek, and camped on the 2nd of June on what has since been known as ‘Battle Flat.’ About two hours before daylight the next morning they were attacked by a large body of Indians. The Indians would, doubtless, have waited until daylight, but one of the boys raising up, led them to believe that they were getting up. Every man was wounded and two of the horses killed before daylight. There was a continuous shower of arrows coming from the enemy, who were all around in fearful odds, and the boys were driven from their camp, taking up their position some three hundred yards away where they were still surrounded by the foe. The Indians took possession of the camp and made a breakfast upon the two dead horses. The boys found themselves in a terrible condition—all wounded and some of them in a frightful manner. Henry was wounded in the arm, but his legs were all right, so it was decided that he should break through the enemy's line and go for help. He took Frank Binckley, who had a ball through the bridge of his nose which drove a bone into an eye putting it out, with him. It was feared that Binckley would go insane if left. The two attempted, at about eleven o'clock in the forenoon, to crawl through the brush, but were soon discovered, and a running fight was then kept up for some distance. The men took a circuitous route to avoid being ambushed and to have the advantage in the ground. The party being aroused from their beds so suddenly, and in warm weather, had but little on, and these two wounded men made the run through the mountains from eleven a. m. until eight a. m. the next morning, barefooted. When they reached Walnut Grove a company of ten men soon started out and found the other boys, who had fought the Indians until in the forenoon, when the hostiles left, probably thinking that the game was not worth the cost. The boys were all taken in and all recovered but Sam Herron, who died nine days after.”

Hi all. Here's the latest:

Looks like the trip is shaping up to be more fun than ever!

Besides having the FJ Team riding with us, we also can expect to see the "Off-Road Magazine" featured folks from the July 2006 issue. What do I mean?

Scott Brady of Expeditions West will be there. Scott wrote the two articles in the current issue of Off-Road Magazine. One was a feature on my 100-Series, and the other was on a trail run that Scott lead in AZ. Scott also just returned from running the Morocco Outback Challenge where he finished in FIRST PLACE. Way to go Scott (and Nathan)!
Info on that is here:
http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=920

You'll also see Chris "Baja Taco" who's been featured in numerous magazines. He drives a very cool expo-type Tacoma with an on board bumper-mounted camera.

Figure in our AZ-own Steve "Sonoran Steel" leading the run and me writing a story on the trip, and that makes for a must-come run. We'll be there in our newly-completed '97 Lexus. (Yes, the vibes are corrected so the 100 stays at home) DeSoto Mine is a favorite AZ trail for a lot of folks. I can't wait!

AT THIS TIME I'D LIKE TO GET A HEAD COUNT AS TO WHO IS PLANNING TO COME! THIS WAY WE CAN FINALIZE PLANS/STRATEGIES BASED ON THE VEHICLE COUNT. When I have an idea on the amount, I'll update everyone. THANKS!

I will be there with brother Rob. A buddy may make it in his new FJC, he is on the fence about the new trail, he hasn't been wheeling in years and dosen't want to screw up the new truck before the plates get here!

I will be there in the 100 hopefully if Christo sends the suspension on time...Waiting for The N74L bushings.... If not the 100, I will be taking apart my 40's carb this weekend and hopefully getting it ready as a backup...

Hope to see everyone's awesome rigs there....Sounds fun..

I'll be there, hopefully some others from the FJ Cruiser Forum. Many people over there are upset with the trail change and are leery of damage on new vehicles etc., me included.. I haven't been wheelin since my 95 Wrangler that I got rid of in 99. It was locked f&r, very capable, tons of seat time in it. But rusty and in a much more expensive vehicle that is much more top heavy, tip heavy....
Go ahead and count in at least 3 late model FJ's from the FJ Forum....

Nice meeting you guys at Sonic, I look forward to wheelin with you!!!!!!

That's why I'm not allowed to get a NEW 4x4. I wouldn't treat it any different than I have my old ones, in no time I would have it loved-up with AZ pinstripes and gouges in anything hanging to low underneath. And probably some rocker damage as well. I gots no respect for nice things :D 5 or 10 years from now the ban will be lifted (read-I'm married) and I can get an old FJ and show it my kinda love. Since I can't really wheel it, I don't really want it.
