I am building my 82 Mini into a pretty hardcore rockcrawler, and after watching a guy with a dual ulitmate crawler box with 42s this weekend I am not sure the 22r is going to be able to push the 44s and 1-tons I am going to eventually run. I have a few options to go with right now. I have a FJ60 that I got for cheap and I am thinking of swapping in the complete drive train out of it. Or using the 2f and putting a SM465 behind it and parting the rest of the truck out. Has anyone used a 2F and FJ-60 drive train in their Mini? I have not had a chance to get my 2f running and this was just a thought that has been running through my head. I would love a 3.4 or 2.7 but I have the FJ60 so I wouldn't have to purchase much.

got tape measure?

There is no way a fully dressed 2F will fit between the front radiator core support and firewall in a mini-truck. I guess you could sawzall a huge hole in the firewall, and remotely mount the radiator in the bed, but I wuld still go with some sort of V6 arrangement.

the truck has already been rolled hard...it is now fully caged with the bed bobbed to 38"s. I have no problems relocating the radiator. I would have to if I ran a V8 anyways and that is my other option. I have the FJ60, a SB350, and a TD 427 that I could use. I would just like to keep it toyota. I also plan on keeping the rear axle in the stock location and moving the front axle forward about 6". I was thinking of running a SM465 and 208 behind the 2f to get a crawl ratio of 73:1. I think that would wheel better than the 22r doubled with an 85:1 crawl ratio. but that is why I ask because I don't have much experience with toyotas.

Are you trying to stay with stock diff gears in the axles? If so, then a 22R is not going to push 44's on a trail unless you have a lot more gear reduction in the T-case area....

With 44's you'd need about a 6.38 diff gear to get back to stock (They don't make that for the 8 inch diff)

Are you going to be driving this around much, or just on the trails? If in town, I'd say get something with more torque.... if just on the trails, I'd gear the (#*&$ out of it and drive it like you stole it. Mini truck drive trains are cheaper to mod and cheaper to replace, and you have more options for fun stuff.

That's not to say that you couldn't regear the diffs and drive it on the road pretty easily.

With a double t-case set up most people go with 4.7's in the rear wich puts you at 173 to one, roughly....

Unless you're a pro fabricator and have lots of time and money on your hands, I'd go with the 22R.

eventully I will go with 6.17s or 7.17s in the 1-tons, this is a trail only rig. but i saw a toyota this weekend with 4.7s in the rear case and 4.10s in the diffs and he could hardly turn his 42s. I tried to sell the FJ to pay for the build up but no one was really interested, so I was just thinking about using what I have instead of spending money I don't really have right now.

PS just measured and it looks possible.

I wouldn't do it, atleast not with the 2F that was in my FJ60. Those are grumpy, needy, heavy, oblong engines imo. It would be easier and in the long run for efficient to stuff a 4.3 or a 5.7 TBI in there. The 2F has a bit more torque but the hp is not much more than that of a 22r or re. And gas, holy gas would that be a pisser. Just my opinon, the 2F is a good engine if kept perfectly in tune at all times, but is not gas friendly, nor all that powerful. If I did use one, it would be heavily desmogged and I'd stuff a throttle body conversion on it.

going from a 22r to a 2f is a big change. I say go for it just because I like outside the box ideas using all toyota parts. You'll love the grunt of the 2f at around 1000 rpms. Perfect offroad.

Do a spring over on the 60 and then mount the pickup body onto the chassis.

I can visualize that... how much wider I wonder are the frame rails? The 60 frame rails are set in from the side of the body quite a bit. About a foot.

would a 3fe be any better? I know where I can get one of those with everything to make it work. What transmissions fit behind a 3fe? just the auto.

I would think the frame rails are about the same. I will have to measure.
If someone will host a pic I will email it to you so everyone can see what I am working with.

I can post the pictures if you would like. The 3fe isn't a lot better really. It does have fuel injection though. I think it has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 2f. I could be wrong though.

how about 2f breathing propane.

Honestly, If i had a 60 with a pos body to work with and a 3fe motor (from a 62) lying around I would bolt the 3fe efi head onto the 2f block and throw in a toy box (Marlin makes crawl boxes for the 60 tcase). Hack most the body off the 60 (which it looks like you are already comfortable with by the photo). I would not bother with actually using the mini body since everything would just simply fit better by sticking with a 60 frame and body. Trim off enough stuff and it could weigh in at about the same as the mini (if the mini had a 2f and heavier axles and such) but with a back seat. Check out the 3fe list for some ideas. If you put too much motor in your mini then dont you have to build up everything else accordingly any way? I would try to stay light and nimble with my 22re mini or just commit to a bigger heavier cruiser based ride.
