I just read that the FJ Cruiser is being discontinued (at an undisclosed date). I was wondering if anyone heard about this too. I think is kind of sad, although I own an 80 and love it, the FJ do have some appeal to them

Bold below is mine...

The 10 Best Discontinued Cars- Yahoo! Autos Article Page

Toyota FJ Cruiser. (About $25,000; unconfirmed; 33 percent.) Toyota's answer to the Jeep Wrangler has been a hit with off-roaders and beach bums, but the FJ Cruiser has never garnered the mainstream appeal Toyota sought. Still, this retro rambler boasts strong safety and reliability ratings, and its rugged looks have a kind of timeless appeal.

I had heard rumors and that Yahoo story also appears to still just be rumors for now. But I believe it is going out and I too have a place in my heart for them. I almost leased one when they first came out but ended up with my 80 instead and it's by far the best move I have ever made.

Actually, from what I read in the off road magazines that we get at the shop today, the Toyota Spokesman specifically mentions that the FJC will NOT be discontinued. In fact, they have another special edition due to debut in 2010.

The magazine has 2 pages of Q & A. The magazine writers with the questions and the Toyota spokesman with the answers. Bunch of questions regarding Toyota trucks and SUVs, diesel, solid axle, etc...

I will try to scan the article tommorow and put it up.

Here is the exact quote:

Q. Is the FJ Cruiser going to be killed ? Rumor is that it's not long for this world. What about a redesign ?

A. As of the present, there are no plans to "kill" the FJ. For 2010 it will receive the revised V-6 engine that is being released on the new fifth-gen 4Runner. It will also receive a larger rear differential (same size as the new 4Runner) and a revised steering rack that will enhance steering feel and reduce turning radius. There will also be a limited-quantity special edition coming during the 2010 model year.

keep dreaming

I:hhmm:f they make something with a solid front axle and diesel I will gladly go broke making payments again. Until then no new cars for me.

I am not holding my breath.

Toyota, Hyundai refute report of discontinued models — Autoblog

"There are no plans to discontinue either model. The Yahoo story is erroneous in that it was based on conjecture from unnamed analysts from Kelley Blue Book. The reporter (Newman) was informed of the factual errors in his story, multiple times yesterday. He was also questioned on why we weren't allowed to confirm or deny these assumptions. It was poor reporting that unfortunately has an Internet reach."

The re-design of the 4runner with a specific trail version, and the issuance of a "special edition" of the 2010 FJC appears to be classic positioning for discontinuance of the FJC line in 2011, no matter what the company officials are saying today.

Offroaders aren't going to like a reduced turning radius. One nice thing about our 80's is that, at least by the seat of my pants, they have a very good turning radius for such a big truck. No imperical studies or evidence to support this on the 80's, just 15 years of driving it.
