So, I think I need to either rebuild or replace my master cylinder. This got me thinking about upgrading to an 80 series master. So what is the opinion about this? Is it worth it? Is it truly a direct bolt in? Oh yeah this is in a 77’.

I bought one of those non-ABS 80 masters from C.Dan back when I added rear discs. Still have it in a box on a shelf somewhere. Original '74 master works just fine. I've rebuilt my master two or three times in the past 25 years, easy and cheap rebuild.

I bought an after market '91 80 series M/C for my truck.

I installed it and there was not enough travel for it to work well. Maybe it needed some mods.

I just rebuilt my original M/C and that works great.

Anyone wanna buy a slightly used '91 80 series M/C. Still in the box.

I do run a non-abs 1996 fzj80 master cylinder that I purchased new from Toyota. I run a 1976 booster and I did have to make a spacer between the booster and master cylinder. Also had to adjust push rod depth, but it works great. I can lock up 37's and stop with great confidence. I do run four wheel disc. The fronts are monster calipers from TLC and the rears are early Tundra front brakes. Overall I am happy with it.

Since you are disc F/R, you had to pull the residual valve from both circuits?

I've been running one for about 6 years, works well and fits proper with minor adjustment. I originally had a single circuit system (4wheel drums too, which slower but better control than the 4 discs on it now). I wouldn't mind another 1/8" diameter on it though, but it locks up the heavy pig.

I'm not sure if they push more fluid than the MC found on most 1970s disc brake cruisers though.

Thanks for all the responses. I am going to try to rebuild the existing master because I am cheap. If that doesn't work I going to the 80 master.
