Piece o' crap 4 wheelin' pretender. :D

Now Dave that isn't fair. Nobody jsut jumps to a Trek mtn bike or a Harley Davidson. You have to start with a tricycle and then training wheels before you are ready to for a serious 4wheel drive vehicle. CJ's fit that purpose well! :D

willies was awarded the GI contract based on the assumation(probably correctly) that bantom could'nt meet the demands of the contract.

yeah, that's the reason for the 'sorta together...', ha ha

that was a cool program on the history channel, except for the part where they called the two fj40's jeeps. oh well. i remember the thread when that one came out, ha ha.

nice analogy: jeep as training wheels

Thought it would be apparent from context. It is a jeep.

Lot of people jump right to Harley Davidsons. They are very similar to Jeeps. Weekend warriors run to the image. They think noithing of poor build quality and poor engineering to "ride/drive an icon"

When you figure it out, when you want to ride rather than be seen, when the bike is more important than the clothing line, then you can ride the big boys bikes. ;)

Dunno nothin' about Trek mountain bikes. If it ain't got a motor...

CJ-7 was the last production model of the jeep by AMC, ending in 1986 when Chrysler bought the rights to the Jeep as AMC went out of business. I used to own one, which is why I have a '40 now.

Both Kaizen and Hoshin were originated at Toyota, as well as TQM. It is interesting to note though, that thier quality program was based on the work of three American statisticians (Deming and two more), brought over by MacArthur to help rebuild the bombed out Japanese manufacturing sector.

Great discussion here, it's more ammo for my arguements with my neighbor who is a Jeep fan. =)

new guy from Canada. Interesting topic. I have several friends with jeeps, willy's and YJ's. Their pretty tough competition. In the end however, when the going gets brutal, (logs, boulders, x-treme mud, deep creeks, etc) I always make it through with my 40. Somtimes by winch or by pull, but I always make it back to my house under my own power (even with an exploded birfield).
Sadly the same cannot be said of my friends, I've had to eplain more than one late night to my wife due to pulling a jeep home!

One more reason for an FJ-40? My brother is a jeep man. He built a frame and fabricated a CJ-3 body, beautiful job. His choice of running gear after watching my lack of repairs over the years? FJ-40 running gear! So, if a jeep creep is willing to sacrifice his own integrity for landcruiser running gear, the choice should be obvious.

To me the landcruiser is what the Heep shoulda been. i almost bought a heep (thank the Lord I didnt! seriously!) and i saw a landcruiser on vacation fell in love with the look and havent looked back! i rode in a CJ-7 and it felt really weird compared to the cruiser. It felt really tinny. unlike the cruiser. it was nice and solid.

I would buy a old flatfender just caue its cool and relatively light but I would run non jeep running gear in it maby minitruck axles tbi 4.3 sm420 dana 300 the only thing thats jeep is the body and maby the t case. If I did that it would be just about as capable as a stock cruiser. So I guess in the long run cruisers are cheaper.

you gotta be gentle on john ferg, in aus we don't have that jeep obsession you guys have to put up with... it'd be the equivelent of you guys asking an american layman what a holden commodoor ss was

speaking of the quality of parts, I heard that the steel used on the older 40's came from 2 places. the beds and screws were from one place and the bolts, front body and frame from another. the steel used for the beds and screws was of a lower quality, hence the rusted tubs and screws that always snap.

anyone else hear this before?

only thing i have heard of concerning the steel quality is the years... 80+ had the worst grade and most likely to rust, then, < 80 to something else, was second best and the older guys have the best steel.

but who REALLY knows?
