first post - new fj40 owner

hey, i just bought a (i think) 1978 FJ40 2 days ago. I opened up the glove box today and found an owners manual for a 77 so I'm not so sure anymore. Apparently there is supposed to be a rivited plate near the drivers side door hinge with the production date, but i guess mine was removed. Is there another easy way of telling for sure what year it is? I guess some pics would be nice too, eh?

There should be another ID plate. Mine is on the pass side inside, fender, but from the pic it looks like you have one on the firewall above your heater blower on the pass side.

You can also correlate from frame numbers, which are stamped on the passenger side front frame behind the bumper.

sizzlechest is just a nickname taken from the jerky boys (they used to make prank phone call albums). anyways, how do i decode the ID plate under the hood?

Nice score.
Seeing how pristine your truck looks triggered a blast of nostalgic memories for me. To think mine looked like that once. I can't believe the rear jump seats are still intact. Mine broke off within a few months and were replaced on warranty with an upgraded set with fold down legs.
I wouldn't take back a single dent or scratch though. They're trophies.

On my March 1977 the fasten belt warning indicator is on the lower left dash, near the plate you are missing. I see your indicator is on the dash.

I also do not have those vents on each end of your dash.

the 2 numbers following 'fj40' in the VIN will tell you the year of production, starting with 1960, i think

my 72 fj40 starts out 'fj12...'

?? I'm pretty sure the number after the "FJ40" is just a sequential number.

nice 40, I noticed it still have the stock radio plate cover.........so nice to see one someone hasn't hacked up to fit CD player

Nice rig. The PO (previous Owner) probably just picked up a manual for a 77. 77 and 78 are very similar in features.

found it, ya i had to do a bit of sanding, but what the hell. it's 274768 and that number isn't on the list?!?!?!

or is every cruiser different and that just means it was built between april and may of 1978? would that mean it's 79 model then if it was built in 78?

April of 78 manufacture would be a 78 model year. They usually change model years in Sept.

In your first series of photos, the fourth one shows an ID tag attached to the bulkhead, engine bay side, just above blower motor. There should be information on that tag also.
