After years of bring annoyed with my stocker FJ40 I finally went SOA. It is 1974 FJ40, full cage, stock springs. I want to run 34 inch tires. Do you guys think I would /will still fit in a 7 ft garage without the hardtop on. I never use the hardtop and I have measured it twice. It seems close.

THose of you that are SOA ...can you clear a 7 ft garage without trouble? and if so what tires/shackles are you running? Just curious about what others have experienced.

It sounds like I will be staying with 33's to be safe.

What did the shackles offer over stock shackles? Could you have cleared 35's without the 2" and 4" shackles? Just curious?

Has anyone done SOA and run 33 9.5 15's safely? It seems a bit high for skinnies? LANDPIMP opinion?

SOA on 33's looks stupid....BTDT....9.5's will look stupider...lol

my rig with 38.5 tires and SOA on FJ55 packs SQUEEZED in my 7' door, but I had to be at 3psi to do so....with some front suspension adjustments and the 4-link, I'm a couple inches lower and SQUEEZE in with the tires at 8psi (street pressure for me)

If the truck doesn't fit.....MOVE! lol
 
Put the bigger tires on and air down if you have to. You went SOA, you might as well have a compressor. I think Ige has 35's (matbe bigger) and she airs down a little to clear the garage, but thats for her custom cage.

I'm SUA at 5" w/ 35's and full cage and can get in the 7' door. Can also get in with full soft top. Have to air down w/ hardtop, though.
 
'74 FJ40 on 35s, SOA with stock springs and shackles. Drives right in with 2" to spare without hardtop or with 45 top. Never tryed it with the full hardtop but I bet it goes in. Hardtop is heavy enough to drop the back a bit.

Thanks everyone. I am glad I checked before I ordered the tires. Man would I have felt like a real idiot. I do own a good compressor but the darn thing blows breakers in our old home. I guess I will need to upgrade the wiring in the garage.

About the tires.....This truck is 50% weekend only driver, 25% light dry trails, 25% heavier dry rocky trails. We don't get much mud in Eastern WA. We do get snow for 90-120 days a year. I am building it to be the FJ40 that I keep forever.

Which tires and width would you guys go with? BFG MT 35 12.5 15 on what size rim ?

I have not cut and turn the knuckles yet, done the shackle reversal, or installed taller shackles as it sounds like that will push me beyond the 7ft. I do plan on ARB lockers down the road.

ige airs down a LOT to clear a 7' door... and yes, my roll cage doesn't clear an aftermarket softtop, but does clear an oem hardtop :^)

dang i need a bigger garage..anybody wanna buy me one?

Guys I know the search button is there. I used it and I read every post about tires going back as far as I can.

My buddy who is helping with the SOA and sliders suggests the Interco Super Swamper LTB 34 10.5 15 . He says they will fit well in my trimmed fenders with UB40 flares, look good and make it inside the garage (7 feet). He also says they will fit my stock FJ60 chrome wheels so i can avoid additional expense.

Anyone have experience with these tires? I am 50% dd, rest on trail, snow, etc. Truck gets driven 2000-5000 miles per year.

I love my 35 12.5 15s on 8" rims. Tryed 'em on 10" rims and hated it. Kept bending the lip of the rim and/or popping the bead. Don't do as much asphalt as you so I can't say much about the hiway but it drives good enough to get me to the trailhead with one finger on the wheel(Saginaw PS).

BTW, 35s with SOA on stock springs only rub a little and thats only if you stuff it real hard like in a wash. I can't get mine very close at all on an RTI ramp.
 
If I were ordering new tires today, it would be radial IROK's. For a mere 5000 miles a year, you can live with some road whine, and they get great reports on snow, rock, mud, and sidehill traction.

37's are out there, not sure on other sizes in the radial tho.

Steelie rims are cheap, don't spend $600 on tires trying to save $150 on rims.

You want to know why the LTB's are cheap? Because each tire will need 20 to 30 ounces to balance. I hated mine. They were 33X13.50's. GREAT off road, tore up a lot of s***, but as soon as you hit 25 MPH or higher, well, just hope you're not sitting on your shifter.

There are better tires out there. Don't jump into any "just because"....HTH.

Follow up questions (I need to order the tires this week)

OK Woody and Crew- IROK's OK thanks. I will call and get a quote from 4wp.

Do we agree then on rim size? 15 by 8 inch or 15 by 10 inch. It appears that the 35 inch tires aren't available on their website. Could that be?

Do you guys think they will rub in the rear? I did install the UB40 flares and cut the rear fenders out.

Will I eventually need to cut and turn the knuckles?

Should I do the shackle reversal required or OK to leave as is. I have heard this gives an extra inch or two.

Mine doesn't fit.
SOA, shackles, 35" BFG's
I have to air down.
My truck is too tall.
 
I would agree Iroks are cool...as i have a set of bias 36s waiting to be put on the truck...they rival 38SXs from what i have seen. The other "cool" all around tire out there is the Truxs Mud tires from Interco. Lot of jeep people are running them on the trail rig/DDs and they seem to hold up and perform well...also have and FJ80 with them on there in our club...they worked so well he flipped over:-P
