Pete, the tailpipe is angled down right at the exit point not unlike the stock tailpipe. Matter of fact it is almost the same shape other than it is mounted up higher. Ive experienced no issues even though Ive had it under water before. Ive left the engine running each time though.

Have you done any emission test since you have the rear bumper installed? I wonder if the emission people have any issue with your tail pipe.

Contact info

A lot of people have been asking for contact info, so I asked and Tommy gave me permission to post up his email and the phone number I have for him. With luck, anyone interested can see my bumper at the next cruise in.

On OBD2 '96 and newer rigs, they don't care what exhaust is on it. They don't even look under the rig, if the ECM is happy, no codes, it's good to go.

Alvin has a similar exhaust set up and has had no problems from emissions testing as far as I know on his 1994.

Lx a little to different

“Essentially’ the same vehicle, the devil is in the detail when it comes to the differences between the Toyota and the Lexus. I’m only the second build he has had, and it turns out the cladding on my lx450 is different than Murf’s Toyota. The cladding is blocking the area where Murf had side loops put on the bumper. Tommy called to let me know and discuss some options. If Murf shows up for the next meeting, I’ll try and park next to him so the differences can be highlighted.

And yes, when it is done I will post pictures. Try and stop me.
P.S., I’m impressed with this young man’s attention to customer service. (Boy do I feel old saying/tying ‘young man’).:hhmm:

Getting powder now. Hoping it will be ready by Friday’s get together.

Glad your happy with it - I just talked to Tommy the other day and he was telling me about the bumper. I like your options, it turned out nice ~ Looks great!

Sorry I didn’t post up sooner. I can’t find the cable to download high quality pictures from my fancy new camera! Need to settle for camera phone photos.
Bumper is finished and I’m very happy. Other then the second swing out, there are only a couple of changes from Murf’s bumper that jumps out. First, the lx rear is slightly wider because of the cladding on the side. Taking the cladding off leaves a mess, so Tommy moved the loops from the top of the bumper to the sides. (Compare the first picture below to Murf’s pictures to see the difference). Second, he has changed the design of the tire carrier to allow for larger tires. If you look at the second picture it shows the clamp that slides up and down the main tube of the tire carrier to adjust for tire size. Lastly, he used a bend on the outside of Murf’s bumper, but because of the cladding he finally cut and welded the outside of my bumper.
My second swing out was to my specs. I wanted a ladder and basket, and he delivered. The ladder is solid, with a little movement if an adult gets on the top rung. The basket was planned for a cooler, but will fit three jerry cans. (Phil, any more group buys planned for the water cans?).
The ladder was ordered at the same time I ordered one of the Mule equipped roof racks. It has arrived and should be installed this weekend or the next. So instead of a ladder leading nowhere, it will be a ladder leading to my rack. :bounce:
I just want to say that working with Tommy was great. If I have any regret it is that I didn’t have more time to work with him. He really enjoys his work, and will spend time talking and thinking over ideas. I view this project as an alternative between do-it-yourself and off the shelf. I just don’t have the skill set, or the time, for a diy, but off the self somehow doesn’t have the same ‘feel.’ Even the Mule roof rack is really not a mass produced item, more of a guy on the mud board with a dream.
After I picked up my bumper, I ran into Shannon, Jackson and Brittan at a friend’s fap shop welding some sliders and a 4x4 labs bumper. Something about the camaraderie of spending a couple of weekends sweating with your manly men friends for your rig that I guess I missed out on. (My version of mockery). :flipoff2:
I’m planning on working with Tommy on some sliders next, but just got drawn for Elk in December. Soooo, I’m thinking about a front bumper with a snow plow attachment! Up for it Tommy?

Hey Murf,
After having your rear bumper for awhile, how do you like your tire carrier design? Would you prefer a more traditional style carrier if you could do it again? I'm ready to get a rear bumper and just emailed Tommy. Thanks!

I wouldnt change the design with the only difference would be to have the adjustable "2nd Gen" post adjustment like Cook had his made with Tommy. I like the support under the tire as well even though I think I like the support better after I cut off the rear most loop that my new 325's wouldnt fit down into.

Of course he will make whatever you like but this design is very secure and no rattles or movement. I suggest brainstorming what you like with Tommy - he has some great ideas in his head that can take what you like and start throwing some interesting twists into them.

It has been two years since the bumper was built like I mentioned Ive decided to move up a size from 315/70R17 to a 325/70R17 which is taller and quite a bit wider. I knew that the new tire would not fit in the cradle (and didnt) so out came the sawzall :hillbilly:!

Being that the rear cradle angled up, I measured where I could cut off the rear part of the hoop and leave part of the arms intact where they can still support the tire and allow it to sit down to where the wheel lined up properly to the center mount.

I touched up the metal area where cut and plugged off the ends of the tubes.

It fits well and without the bottom being pushed in has decided to have a more distinct rake to it (top leaning in) which Ive decided I like better.
