I'm at the end of my path for a this 2F.

It's as tuned up as I can think to make it:

-289,000 mile original shortblock. 130 psi average compression. Fresh cylinder head and valve adjustment. No leaks from intake or exhaust. Almost completely desmogged.
-2.25" catless to a factory sized muffler
-trollhole carb idling at 700rpm
-oil changed with delo diesel oil every 3000 miles along with a top tier filter (History going back to 10k from New with the same OCI) magnetic plug going in this next oil change.
-plugs changed with NGK copper every other oil change due to some oil consumption evident on the plugs. Oem cap and rotor, new oem coil and denso plug wires.
-fuel filter every 3,000 miles because of unknown condition of tank. Don't know if it was covered in the recall. Don't want to risk my pretty trollhole carb getting dirty.
-functioning distributor venting system with new vcv from city racer65

The last thing I'm going to do is install a recurved JimC distributor and advance base timing to 9-12. I'll probably set it up for mid grade or 93. This will complete the de smog by the book. It's only at 5-7 base timing now.

I'll also be going to a 3FE air box with a carb hat to remove the flat air cleaner to declutter the engine. No performance gain expected.

What else can I do aside from aftermarket items? Is this as good as I can make this engine run?

I'm happy with it and the truck has been dead solid reliable. Averages 10 city and 14 highway, has piled up about 10k since the refresh and has no issues running for long highway trips. It's even seen 76mph on the gps.

Dare I wonder, is this the end of mods and improvements until the 2F blows up?

Ignition timing on your stock distributor? Without EGR I think it's recommended to set it from 7 deg BTDC to 10 or so, maybe a few more depending on whether or not you kept HAC in your desmog.

No HAC (yet) and the timing advance will be done on the new recurved unit. Still at sea level and I've not got any plans to go higher yet.
