Billie is my first female dog after a life time *(decades) of having male dogs.
She is sweet, no doubt. caring, lovable, affectionate, gentle, beautiful girl.
but
if you ask her if she wants to go for a truck ride ... she climbs up on the couch. When old Cruiser was around she had him to snuggle with and she was excited. When ever he didn't come along then she would cower in the back or try and get up on my lap ... not a good idea while driving.

Is this normal with female dogs? are males more excited to ride than females? being the first i can't say.

I am beginning to shop for another Malamute cross, i am leaning towards another male because of the personality and because my males seem to LOVE going for long truck rides. Hell, Cruiser and I did 11,000 km trip together and once back home i had to go back into town to fill up and he just jumped in the passenger seat enough to say "i don't care where we are going, i just want to come along".

So, if females are more inclined to be home bodies and not enjoy the ride then i will stop shopping for one.

Feedback welcome.

She's beautiful and looks like a happy camper.

I think the ride along thing is more individual preference and personality than gender based. In my younger days, had a female Elkhound that loved to take trips. My bro had a Malamute/Shepard mix that always came along on wheeling trips. Of the cruiser dogs around here, it's a pretty even mix.

My lab mix Penny was terrified of the cruiser, my wife's truck, and our diesel 1 ton when we first got her. The cars were OK, just not the trucks.

They are loud and clunky and ride a lot rougher and in the cruiser she's got nothing but metal and slides around and cant get a good grip. It took us a LONG time to get her OK with the cruiser and the trucks. Finally, she figured out that where the cruiser went was really awesome. She gets that the cruiser=fun places and now she has no issues getting in them.

I think it's a personality thing more then anything. Some dogs just don't like going in the car. I think Penny tolerates it because she likes the places they go. She still never looks thrilled to be in the cruiser, but she gets in excited now when we ask her if she wants to go.

Totally personality and not gender. I've known males and females on both sides of the ride-along fence. My mom's female is ecstatic for car rides, her male hides behind the couch. All of my dogs- male and female- have loved car rides, but I think I just start them early.

Could be your ride just isn't comfortable enough for her. My current male loves the 70 but thinks twice about a ride in the 40. A dog bed in the back fixed the 40 well enough for him.

If I let my female German shepherd in the truck she will sit for hours waiting for me to drive her around. Even if I'm just wrenching she will sleep on the tailgate until I make her get out.

My parents had a dog that I let get into the cruiser one day while I was working on it... didn't go anywhere but worked on it for a few hours and then went inside. Well come dinner time we couldn't find him anywhere. Looked and looked and called for him... no idea. Finally I found him still sitting in the cruiser waiting for his ride. Ha ha.

I am pretty proud of my dog, all the time it took her this time to be OK with the 40, and yesterday I went to go somewhere in my car and she ran out and kept looking at the 40 instead of the car... she actually WANTED to ride in it.

My dog is smart when it comes to cars though, my wife and I have 7 cars right now... and the dog always knows which keys we have picked up and almost always runs to the right car without any guiding from us... just hearing which keys we grabbed. At first I wasn't so sure.. but I tested it one day by parking the car down by the shop and then grabbing the car keys to see if she's just run to the closest car... nope, ran down and sat in front of the right car.

thanks for the comments guys
for the little girl, it doesn't matter if it is the ford diesel, the 70 diesel, the RVR or the Yaris, she just doesn't like it. being my first female dog i thought it might be gender related ... i guess it is more personality.

damn i miss the old guy at times.:frown:

watch out. they are all b itches

Personality not gender from my experience.

We have 3 dogs, Viszla (M), German Short Haitr Pointer (F) and a Jack Russell (F). The GSP loves the any car, the JR is good, but our viszla is a little nervous sometimes.

What I have found is he is uncomfortable when he does not have good traction when we travel. So I put a pad or blanket down and he is a hero on the road.

Sorry for the loss of the "old boy",. Take care.

our second sheltie is female

We had to put our male sheltie down about two months ago. He was a Great dog very mellow for a blue murle sheltie and very smart.
This is our second one with santa and is becomming a bit of a helion. Has chews laces, lanyars, picks up paper and walks off with it starts to chew on it. Chews and pulls on my socks "warned her many times" . So far,dug a hole in the yard was all mudy and now is three months old today. I think female dogs have more energy or mind drive then male dogs and are more willing to listen to there owwer...which I cannot wait till this one does!!

Our fmale shakes when going in the car and my guess my bj60 even though, I did not see her shake because she was in her cage. Our male sheltie was always excited. He was a unusall dog, in that he loved thunder and fireworks. HE was a very melo sheltie and you can roll him back in your legs up in the air and cradle him and just stare at you :)

very cute, congrats
i found with our female she is extremely smart, very curious and now she is 6 years old a full member of the family. the cat sleeps with her, the new pup is sleeping and she gave him the cold shoulder for the first 3-4 days. then suddenly it was like she accepted the pup as her own. tug of war, disciplines when she see fit but if the pup falls asleep she keeps a watchful eye, sometimes she will lay nose to nose with the sleeping pup.
the told tom cat has been putting up with the pup and the pup is getting more and more ... irritating to the cat so the cat put him in his place this morning. full body take down, 3 min later they were walking side by side.
i wasn't sure if i could get another pup. it wasn't to "replace" old cruiser since i feel no dog can do that but i did it to try and help fill the hole in my heart.
i had been leaning towards another female but ended up getting a male.

please keep the thread going.

very sorry to hear about your sheltie, painful times.

Yes, they can lean..very quickly

I tought my late sheltie many commands and tricks. One of the first was how to pee on command. He would walk say the command and stop right there and go :) Taught him how to give me a hug at 3 months old. he would put his paws on my right shoulder. He was though mellow for sheltie standards. The funny thing was he like most other shelties love balls. He would bounce it off his nose when tossing it to him. Sure miss him but the e-coli we had treated over 2 years, was killing us finacially and then, got pancritus and stopped eating. We had to take him in for IV and flush at $450 and was good for 48 hours but, it returned and stopped eating again. Lost 30% of his weight so sadly, we had to put him down even though he walked into the vet office.

This one is more hyper, is female, has less hair "the males have more hair and are thick" and is almost at times ADHD "distraction is a better example when outside". I wanted a male blue murle like the last one but, no breaders had them. So got the female.

This is what the wife wants. I am more partial to huskies but..they can be trouble as I read on a huskie forum. There wasa topic on the forum that said "What has your huskie eat lately!" Ohh WOW did I laught it was so funny. The one that made me laugh the most was the huskie ate the owners underwear. The owners had to tug underwear out of the dogs butt after it was passing though and had to pull hard to remove it :)

This is the thread and very funny what the owners say.http://www.itsahuskything.com/t890-what-has-your-husky-eaten-lately

Good to hear you found a new friend, he's one lucky pup. Now where are the pics?

wayne are these collie or sheltie mix?

She just thinks the one dog on the far right on the couch looks huge for a sheltie mix ;)

BTW, mine is starting that sheltie spin, where they like to chance there tails. This time, he spun so fast, went whack his head into the stationary bicycle flywheel. Got back up a little stunned shook his head and just walked off.

nah, the female is sheperd and border collie mix. she has been confused with a large sheltie over the years.
pretty laid back and SOOO gentle.

pics, i wasn't going to say anything till i was sure we were going to keep him. the breeder said she would take him back and make a sled dog out of him if we decided he wasn't for us.
but
the wife has taken to him.
the female has grown attached to him and has "come to life" again since we got him.
i am being a lot more reserved this time around, not sure if i want to go through the pain again of a full blown open heart relationship.
even the cat is ... enduring him.

we will give him a couple more weeks.

curious, i have never seen this before. this guy LOVES, i mean really LUSTS wood. going for a walk in the bush and he stops at every tree and licks it, sometimes pulling a wee bit off ... i thought he was marking a trail like older dogs do with pee ... but, he REALLY has been eating wood, bark. when i let him out to pee, he walks over to the wood pile and starts "beavering" a huge block of wood.
i did a quick search and this seems common, should help with keeping his teeth under control.

each dog has a personality, this guy. no fear, you disipline and he yeps like crazy, like you are hurting him and two seconds later he looks at me as if to say "if that is the best you got, well, thats a joke dude".
he is fast for a little guy, extremely strong and very gentle. when he "talks" it sounds like sentences. so cool having a pup ...

and the cat ...
endures him
that old tom, he has no fear but he can show affection. Amigo was sleeping and that tom came up and laid down beside him. i never got the pics but he moved in close and the two snuggled.
pretty cool

What a cutie. I hope you have many happy adventures together.

I've had good luck with female dogs. I've only had one male out of 5 dogs. Female dogs seem less scared, more calm. Sadly, our old girl Beagle is in the last years of her life... She just had knee surgery. But it doesn't keep her from the food bowl. Next dog will probably be a female.

Husky's are such good looking dogs, mine is a Husky mix, and she has been very good to us. Great pics, looks like an amazing pup!
