February expedition trip

after talking to Drew and looking at the reports on the weather situation down there, I am realizing, against my wishes, that the trip there might not be such a good idea at this time. There are a couple of destinations a bit further South that have better weather conditions but we are looking at travel to the area changing from 2.5 days to 3-4 days. I'm not interested in spending 4 days on the highway for 3 days of camping and 4 days back. As for the the snow, we don't know the trails and terrain there when the weather is good, trying it in unusually freaky winter conditions might not be the best plan. It I have to spend 2-3 days on the highway to get stuck in snow, I think I would rather spend 1/2 day on the highway here for the same effect, and not get strip searched by the border guys. I think we might have to revisit our destination idea. I can come up with some alternatives during the week if you guys would be up to that.

thanks Drew for the info and updates.
Graham, I've lost your number, call me early in the week to chat about the trip please.

Graham mentioned something about going to Mojave, it's supposed to be further west of Moab?

there is that, but the weather in the lower elevations and cities is crappy, never mind up in the mountains. So I'm just wondering if it's worth it to travel that far, just to be stuck in snow and freeze.
and that's 24hours of driving not including picking up food once past the border and any extra traffic, so likely 3 to 4 days to get there. I'm hoping to have a more relaxing time off work, I'm sick and tired of 14 hour days here, not sure if I'm up for doing that on the trip.

Mat I will be seeing Lance Romance to take our sliders to the powdercoaters so I will try to call you then

I haven't signed up to Pirate, if you're on it, ask him what the weather is like, I do see snow in the near mountains.
I'm starting to toy with the idea of staying local, bypass the 3 days of highway driving, the harrassment from the border guys and having to buy food there. I looked at the weather maps and the trail maps, the closer we stick to the coast and head North, we have decent weather. There is an option of heading to Clinton, over to Churn Creek, up to Gaspard Lake, onto Big Creek, to Chilko Lake, and keep heading West to Bella Coola. That would easily eat up the 11 days off and if we have issues we're close to Hwy 20 to head back. I know most of that way, there is a little exploration along the way and the elevation isn't bad. The weather across that area is from -2 at night to 10 day time, with lows of 7, light rain / flurries at times (that's going off a nicer forecast in lower elevation cities). I'm thinking I would rather leave Moab and Death Valley for a time and season I can enjoy everything it has to offer. The further inland we go the more snow we'll find, but since the Coquihalla is clear and the that's at 1300m we should be good for at least that, and the weather is staying warmer on the coast side.
Just a suggestion.

Gotcha- I'll confer with Sir Lancelot since it seems that it is only the 3 of us on board. Panamint Valley was one I was looking at next to DV as well...looks like 2050 km to DV down the I5 to Redding Ca., over to Reno then down the 395 to DV. I used to drive to Reno non stop then DV the next day after a Casino buffet!

F Overland Journal! So on consultation with Lance- He and I are going to Death Valley. We will try to make as far south on I5 on the first day, turn inland around Reding Ca. pass through reno and motor down the valley on the 395 to DV. Temps there yesterday showed a day time high of 21c. Lance and I feel that we can travel closer to home in the warmer months. Saline Valley, Panamint Valley are nearby. We can stay in an organized camp site or in the wilderness in Hole in the wall in DV, there is a store and gas station in the park as well. Feb 12 forcasts out for 22 deg. c.

I would guess it would perfect hiking weather in Death Valley - as most other months it would too risky to go very far on foot, water being the issue. That would interest me, since the wheeling there wouldn't be too challeging.

I installed my Jason sliders today- Sweet! This is Lance and I's final plan. Anyone who wished to join is welcome. We will do the local stuff in the warmer months. Getting this much time off from Her Highness may never happen again.

We plan on doing a relaxed drive down there and back to DV, I'm going to take 2 weeks off for this trip. Yeah, the hiking will be great it looks like. I would prefer to get out of town, and exploring the desert has been something I wanted to do. I would still like to do Moab one of these days.

So we were delayed a bit on departure (unavoidably) due to my work and Lance having to get his fueltank dropped. The new (and final) plan is to rendezvous at Chez LanceCruiser on Sunday the 14 th morning at 0800 and leave outta there. Convoy to the border, cross and shop then cruise south. we'll be at the meeting on thursday. Mat- It would be awesome if you can make it- Lance doesnt drink fer chrissakes!
