Here we go again.
With the Olympics looming in the background and those of us that are not looking forward to the idea of being stuck in traffic for 10 hrs, we're doing a little get away.
I've booked off from February 10th (Weds) to 21st (Sun). So far the suggested location is Death Valley, primarily due to the warmer weather, which is a fairly convincing argument. Those interested and that can get the time off please speak up, the rest of you can ignore this thread as it will just make you jealous and bitter.

so you are serious about this mat?
King of the Hammers

just to let you know the area is called the "Hammers" trail system ORV park just outside of Apple valley CA. Its is hardcore smash up your truck break s*** kinda place.

Im going to go just for the race day/closeing cerimonies then staying for a few days to beat my rig then drive home.

Ill try to get a bunch of pics up tomorrw:D

Dan, I have a rusty, expedition style Land Cruiser, I'm not doing the KOH race. We're heading down there to do some exploring and sight seeing, and then driving back in our own trail trucks, back home. Besides, I don't have $200,000+ in sponsors to run a dedicated trail rig for a race like that. It would be cool to stop by and check it out if we're in the neighbourhood but not to run it. My truck is not meant for that.
This is going to be a medium to harder (with any luck) trail run of a place we haven't been to yet (at least myself) and just enjoying the experience, the warmer climate and getting out of town while home gets crazy with tourists and Olympics' fanatics.

You tell 'em Sonny, I'm 9 years into my 16 year hiatus... only 7 more years and I'll have the freedom to do what I want, the kids may even want to come, if I let them. Of course, I won't have any money whilst saving for University educations.
I like the idea of CM10 though

How about Moab? Try this link for some awesome pics. ( and they made it in a landrover)

Just looked at the thread, nice pics and scenery, I would be up for that. First off I think we need to narrow down who and how many are going, then where specifically, I know there are way too many options so we need to be firm as to a place. Now I understand (since I haven't done so myself) that camping in the US is a bit different then in the wide open areas of Canada. There are some restrictions when it comes to fires, where you can drive, where you can camp, etc. Glenn was kind enough to send me a document on Death Valley and it seems like the entire place is just a bunch of rules on what you can and can't do. I'm good with that and respecting the environment by their rules. As long as we know what is expected before we go in. I'll be getting some maps for the areas we are interested in for my GPS and getting prepared for a more controlled type of camping. I figure 2-ish days to get to the destination, 6 to 7 days exploring and 2-3 days getting back should make a great trip. So let's think it through and maybe for those that can get the time off we sit down with a map somewhere with food and beer and figure it out.
Most evenings I'm free and can get together, I know Marcin also expressed some interest in the trip, anyone else? Let's book something for next week to sit down and figure out where we want to go.

PS- can we keep the non-trip chatter out of the thread please.

You know I will be down there for my fourth year in a row....:D My Dad has already booked his flight out.

It was a trip down memory lane... I have all sorts to info on the area...

I know there are a few other areas I would like to check out. It gets cold at night at higher elevations, even snow. This is one spot I still wont to check out... Halls Crossing, UT - Hole In The Rock - Utah's Rock Crawling and Off-Road Forum

Here is another spot in southern CA I would like to check out...
The Mojave Road - - Jeep at Off-Road.com.

I'm interested too. I will have to see if I can get the time off from work. Post when and where you guys are going to meet for coffee, and hopefully I can make it, I'm working nights next week though.

damn I'm only 15 months in...I guess that resets if we have another

I can meet up when you guys like- I have some pics of DV, Grand Canyon,Bryce Canyon, Grand Staircase from our '09 spring road trip too- no wheeling on that trip tho. Mat- sounds like we have similar objectives. And we could use Lances' huge 81 as a winch anchor...( or slipstream behind him on the freeway!)

I don't want to jinx it, but it's looking like I might get the time off of work for this, the stars and the planets are aligning....muahh ha ha ahhhh.......!
I will find out soon next week, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. This is one trip I've been thinking about doing for awhile.

My truck weighs about the same as yours Graham, it just looks heavier. You guys can draft behind me, because I will be drafting the semi in front of me:steer:. I'm wishing I had the old gears in the truck for this trip, 1000km/tank on the Hwy:crybaby:.

I'm going to have to get some stuff replaced on the truck before we go. I guess I will have to sacrifice my weekends, and become an OT whore.
