Pulled my clutch on my parts truck and it is a aisin. Everything I am reading tells me it holds more oil but I didn't find any numbers. Any recommendations on how much oil to fill it with?

Talked with Part Dan and he said 3 1000ml tubes.

He also mentioned something about only the blue or the black clutches, not the natural color.... I don't know about that. Anyone have pics?
 
Have you drained it yet?

If not, I would drain it and capture all the contents to determine a starting point.

But it should be in the range of 35-50mL, I have seen varying volumes of fluid put back in the clutches.

A really good thread was linked above, it offers a good starting point.

Sorry mine is a green hub. I read that thread. I guess I missed what I was looking for. I have not drained it but I read that Toyota puts in just enough and there is room for more. So somewhere between 35 and 50ml? Say 40ml?

It depends on how much will fit, it could be 40mL, but it could be more than that....you need to drain it first and then begin adding the oil.
 
I would split it apart and let it drain for a day or two.

When I did mine it took between 50-60ml and has been working like a champ

When you have it split and are putting fliud in the one side you can see inside the little chambers and I put fluid in until it just reached the top of the inside of the chamber

I had to pour in a bunch and walk away, pour in some more let it settle etc.

Make sense?

go with the 10k you will be fine

I read somewhere onhere that the older fan clutches do not like the thicker stuff, I think it came from one of the fan clutch gurus Toolrus or Landtank IIRC

Though, 10K will work plenty for some Aisin. Do your research and you'll find what you're looking for.

I say if your gonna do it might as well go to 20k. I don't think it will over cool.
Just my opinion since we have alot of long hills in kalifornia.
 
ive heard that 20k in an aisin clutch will almost never disengage causing worse gad mileage, but im not certain on that
 
Well let me ask this. What comes stock? I want to upgrade from that. We have been 100 plus for the past week. On the hills I am creeping up to the 220 mark. As soon as it flattens out I start to cool down. When it's cooler out I typically stay around 190 to 200. I would like to be able to climb hills and the gauge not move if that's possible. That is why I am doing this. Its not a DD but I drive it often because I want to and I may try to pull a boat in the near future

I run 10k in my black clutch. No issues and happy.

go with the 10k you will be fine

I believe stock is 3k. Toyota dealers sell a 6k. I opted for the hobby store (don't recall the brand/abrv that I bought) for under 10 bucks and had plenty left.
 
Sidenote, Have you tested your rad? Any cool spots. I went down the clutch mod and tstat before I put my hand on the rad and half of it was cool. :(

I think stock in the Aisins is 6k fluid. Very thin. I have drained several brand new blue hubs and I was surprised how easily it drained out compared to the Eaton clutches.

I haven't had any problems with the clutch not disengaging. The guys in Arizona with SC's have run 25k+

It's amazing how many of the old clutches fail after 130k + miles. The easier way to check them out is use a rolled up piece of newspaper and use it to stop the fan. The last one is checked I used 4 pieces of rolled up paper and it stopped it.

Edit, I think I'm wrong about the OEM fluid viscosity. It's most likely 3k

Another trick to adding new fluid is to heat up some water and but your new bottle of fluid in it to heat it up so it's easier to add into the clutch.
 
itbrokeagain....how are you measuring coolant temps in you 80? From your sig. line I see you have a 91', so I would imagine you have a aftermarket digital gauge installed?
 
I just did this on mine (Eaton). I used about 60 mL of 15000. Haven't had the chance to climb any long grades yet...
