Yeah the shipping could be expensive but I wonder... maybe not. Never hurts to ask, right?

I'm planning on hitting the easy button and having them include a xfer case that's already been rebuilt so I can just plop it all in as one unit. Especially if I'm doing the frame. One less thing to mess with.

We ship LOTS of items large and small all over the US and you’d be surprised to hear that most of the time shipping costs are pretty reasonable.
For example, we just shipped a pallet with 3 complete axles from our location to a friend near Austin TX for under $300.
Always happy to help.

I just chose option three and am finishing up the disassembly part of the process. See here. You're timeline seems a bit short, but I suppose limiting what components you disassemble, paint, and rebuild can have a big effect. I'm stripping EVERYTHING, powder coating everything, and replacing pretty much every bearing, seal, etc that's down there. I'm also stripping/refinishing the bottom of the body while I've got it off (hopefully), and re-gearing to 4.11s.

A couple of things to think about: 1) I ordered an H55F in NOV and was told that there was a huge backlog and that it would take 2+ months to get one.. It ended up only taking one month, but that's something to consider. 2) Are you doing this in Bend? Bc Commercial Powder is 2-3 weeks turnaround on a frame. Mine is there getting just blasted for now and they've had it for 2 weeks already.

I used an engine hoist to pull my body off and it worked OK.. Definitely not ideal, but it worked and didn't damage anything. You'll need to pull everything off the front (fenders, rad, etc) and need another set of hands to steady the body as you raise it and move the chassis out from under it. Oh, and of course, having room to do all of this is key. you need at LEAST two car spaces to do all this (one for body, one for chassis, and more to maneuver the chassis around).

LMK if you have any specific questions. Happy to help.
Super excited to read through your build thread today!! I'm leaning toward #3 as the best option as it will not only be fun but manage a bunch of items in an easier manner.

I'd be doing the work in Seattle where my tools are, but I'd love to come check out your rig!!

Cheers,
Adam

Made the decision to pull the body and address the frame at the same time as the trans/tcase, clutch, RMS and oil pan gasket. The frame needs to have the c-channels addressed, sand blasted and then powder coated. I'll be using the same method as @LazarusTaxa I just need to borrow an engine hoist from someone in the Seattle area if they'll let me. Any cruiser heads have an engine hoist I can use for a few weeks?

In the meantime, I've ordered some parts for the job from City Racer and Amazon. I have my name on an h55 and xfer case that @orangefj45 will be obtaining in the next month or so.

Looking forward to this. I'm pretty confident that I can finish the job in 4 weeks, but my push goal will be 3 weeks. The only possible hang up will be the blasting and powder coating of the frame.... plus the unknown. I might pull the body off this thing and find the frame has some serious rust.... but I think it's pretty solid.

Hit me up if you have an engine hoist I can use. I gave mine away after my last project, so I'm hoping for some good Land Cruiser karma here.

Looking forward to building your combo and then seeing the install pics!

Thanks again!

Thanks Georg,

I'm excited to do this. I'll post up each step and a bunch of pictures along the way. I feel like it might be a touch more work to do it this way but it will allow for some of those items to be handled in an easier manner.... ie the dreaded c-channel job should be considerably easier with the body off.

Cheers,
Adam

Don't forget the new body bushings! I could see that getting overlooked easily. I can't wait to see the process!

Yeah I reached out to @OGBeno for new body mount bolts and nuts but having had a look at my mounts, they appear to be in surprisingly good shape.... I guess only time will tell.

Stoked to share the process, not the most traditional way to replace a transmission but I think it has merits based on the other items I need to do.

Saw Spiderman and explored Fort Rock which was written about in July/August 2020 Toyota Trails. It’s awesome!

This place is about an hour and a half away from Bend. It was created when a bunch of lava exploded out of the earth and then a lake lapped away at one of the sides. We hiked all over it and it was pretty awesome.
Also, if you don’t have a monster truck tee shirt, you aren’t trying hard enough.

Guess I’m doing this….

That's a good first piece of the large parts pile that will be acquired to do the job! I'm hoping to do this same upgrade this year in between trips and projects.

BTW: nice Para 2. I have one with copper scales and it's great.

Yeah, and a little City Racer order showed up in Seattle today... with the aforementioned 5 spd gear shift knob cap.

I like the Para 2, I think it's a great knife. I have a few, I guess I'm a knife nerd. My favorite is a Mini Crooked River from Bench Made. It's just simple and has an awesome shape. I'll get a pic of my knives one of these days and post it up.

C-Channels ordered from @TRAIL TAILOR !! Stoked to finally support this dude!!

Looking forward to how easy this job will be with the body off.

I visited @LazarusTaxa and his sweet rig, learned how to easily remove the body with an engine hoist.

And... went skiing.... it was a good day.

Parts have started to arrive and I'm looking forward to tearing this pig apart. The only thing preventing me from starting this now is that the Toyota dealership is waiting on parts to do my gas tank recall, I'd like to get that done first or confirm they'll hang on to everything until I finish. I'll call them tomorrow and see what they'd prefer. The representative from Toyota, Rob, has called me a handful of times to check in and make sure things are moving forward. I'm impressed at the level of service I'm getting from Toyota corporate for a 38 year old vehicle.
