Today I noticed what seemed like a lot of extra drive train whine. No puddles of oil that I have seen, I figure a good place to start would be to add/replace all gear oil in the tranny, transf. case and axles... Anything else I should check?

Can anyone guide me to the location of the transmission filler hole? Is it accessable without pulling the transmission out?

When you check your tranny oil level, pay attention to if it is over-full...

Overfull means a bad tranny/transfer seal. That's why you need to pay attention to the level, whatever it is.

X2.........and also ALWAYS remove the fill plug first before draining any fluid.

That sounds like it...it's been awhile since I've had the Toyota tranny.

I don't have a hand pump, gonna fashion something out a a tube and some kind of squeeze bottle:hhmm:

Sounds like fun. Good luck with that. I've tried it too. :)

You can also pick up a cheap plastic pump that screws on most gear oil containers at any auto parts store. It helps a ton.

hehe- so i'm not the only cheap-ass around. I just hate to spend money on tools I rarely use. :wrench:

Trust me, even the cheap plastic pump is a PITA! BUT it is easier than MacGuyverin' it. I do like getting creative in the garage, making your own tools can be fun! :)

Well, today I drained 1 liter of dirty fluid out, replaced it with the 3.1 liters from spec. I hope that'll help :)

I'm going to do the transfer case while I'm there.

both mine have a return line from the transfer to g/box. ill try snap a few pics for you guys.

Well... today I got the xfer case oil changed. When I popped the drain plug, about two spoonfulls came out... there's the source of my noise. It's damp down there, I'm going to assume it's a slow leak that was never, never addressed until the day I see a large puddle underneath.

i remember seeing some mods to level out the tranny and transfer case fluid levels if the seal is bad. Anyone know what that's about? Better to just drop the setup and fix the seal?

i think you have actually moved on to replacing seals but here is an aussie solution for the bad gearbox-transfer seal.... HTH
