I'm wondering if this could be submitted to the NTSB as a safety recall? Seems to be happening to more and more 80's during similar conditions. (Elevation change and hot weather) Happened to me in Moab this year and while driving to Yosemite from the bay area last year. I have the VC120 installed and a new gas cap. I also noticed another 80 in Moab with a crackling OEM canister when we stopped for a while.

Maybe the system wasn't designed for Ethanol, but it's what most of us are pumping into these rigs nowadays.

Mine wasn't that bad, but when I felt droplets I kinda freaked. On Pure-Gas.org it says there are a few non ethanol stations here in Durango. Gonna try one.

So what's the deal with topping off being a bad thing? I've topped off for the past 35 years. My dad topped off. I top off in my other cars.

Just for reference, I still have excessive fuel pressure in high elevation. I have the VC120 and new gas cap. I'm not sure where to go next. Luckily I only have had this problem 2x. Problem is I am planning a solo trip to 10,000ft in Mexico in July (all back country roads and no services), and would love to have this addressed.

Check the charcoal canister and the gas cap must be a OEM also check the breather lines from the filler neck

Maybe the fuel pressure regulator if you did all the other stuff.

Anybody ever looked at the words on Mr. T's gas cap? Drove my 94 around Durango today. Last time this tank was filled was early March. It's been in my garage since. Low 90's here today. I got a little hiss of vapors, but not too bad. Sitting on the garage now I have gas fumes off the driver's side of the hood. My 94 didn't do this in TX.

That is your charcoal canister letting out excess gas.

However in my case the brand new VC120 still did not fix my problem. I am going to inspect vent lines I suppose.. .

If you remove the line from your canister to your tank should be open. Just remove your gas cap and blow in the line from the canister and it should be clear.

If all is clear and you still are getting fuel smell check your fuel regulator as noted by @Dalton wyatt in post #290 above.

I got rid of the CC when converting to the 1HD-FT diesel... no more excessive venting as I am now running the simple pressure relief valve from the tank.

When I had the 1FZ-FE I did the VC120 conversion after having pressure issues, but never had the pressure problems after, including multiple trips to 8000+, and going well over 10,000 a few times on a trip out to CO. Venting was a quick woosh, maybe one or two seconds.

I definitely feel that the increased amounts of ethanol have contributed to the problems with the venting, and also degradation of components...just wait and see if they push through E15, as things will only get worse.

Finally got around to chasing down the leaks in my filler neck and as I anticipated, I am now getting much more fuel pressure built up when I go to loosen the gas cap.

I am going to try to leave the cap loose for now so I don't blow the JB weld putty out and toss in a VC120 to see if that takes care of it. At least the good news is that my tank probably doesn't have a hole or a crack yet.

I plan on swapping out the tank and filler neck this fall along with a new skid plate. I hope the VC120 helps until then.

How much "wooosh" should I expect under normal conditions? My rig has had pin sized holes in the filler neck since I have owned it so I am not sure what normal is.

I get zero "wooosh"

Alright. That is what I will be shooting for. You deleted the check valve though, right?

Yes, I saw no real need for it.
FWIW I had no "wooosh" when the check valve was working correctly.
