Hi everybody,

You all kinda seen my project, in my thread "testing", so now I would like to ask your opinion on engines.

What I have so far, 71 body and frame, FJ60 axles, split case transfer and a PTO winch.

What I need, engine, transmission and a whole lot of little stuff. My mind is set on the H55 5 speed and some kind of chevy motor. So with that, what do you all say. I'm leaning to the Vortec motors, either a 5.3 or the 6.0.

I am SUA with OME springs, giving it a 2 to 3 inch lift. I thought Lil' John had some problems with the 6.0 vortec fitting under an ealry hood, with a SOA setup. So I'm really confused on which way to go. What say ye!

Thanks, Ron

Well I have a 78 with a 350 carby SBC, H55 & no lift of any kind.
At one stage I had a 2" air cleaner sitting on top of my carby, which sat on a 2" spacer plate & it all cleared !
I'm not sure if its the weight of the pig, or the aftermarket camshaft in my SBC, but its very thirsty.
If it was me, I would go injected vortec.

Hey V8,

I also was thinking along the vortec line. Hoping to get some feed back on which one. 5.3 or the 6.0. I beleive, there's a height issue, with the 6.0. If you set it up to clear the oilpan, then the hood will hit the cover on the top.

I have no knowledge of the fuel injected motors at all. I do want to set it up for long distance travel, so I want to get every MPG, out of it , as I can.

Thanks for responding, Ron

Hi Lil' John,

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I knew you had some problems with the 6.0, I read and reread your build alot! I want to stay with the H55, I'm a stick guy, but do you feel the 5.3 is big enough, I would want to tow a trailer [ camping ] with it. There is a vendor on Pirate, who sells low milage engines. The computer would be set up for a 3 wire install. So, hopefully a non-electrical guy like me can get it to run.

Thanks Lil' John, that's the information I was looking for. I'm talking about a small trailer with brakes. The vendor, BD turnkey, says he can set up the computer for what I want. Hope he's right. 5.3 sounds like a winner and alot cheaper than a 6.0.

Pablo, that's what the deal is supposed to be. One reason I want to stay with the H55, so everything bolts up right. I have all the parts, which came from Japan, where PO bought them. He also got a diesel shipped in.

Lil' John,

On the transmission, it's not a cost issue, just want a stick. I've thought about the nv4500, but just decided to pick up a new H55 from cruiser Dan and be done with it. Everything I've read on them, say the H55 is a strong truck transmission. I have no personal experience with them. Also want to get the twin stick conversion for the transfer case, like alot of sticks :D

I remember, you came up with a slick idea using the cable pulls. How did that work .

I've gone the other way around... aside from the NV4500 stick, that is all I've got. I'm going vacuum 4x4 and cable pull for the range boxes using stock FJ55 pulls:D[/QUOTE]
