Yes the belt is broken.
I realize this is an unfortunate situation but you just experienced one of the most feared, yet seldom seen, events that can go wrong with a 100. Interested to learn more as you go, thank you.

Unwarranted fear, in my opinion, given non-interference engine. But I agree that it’s unfortunate, though odds are not too much trouble to correct.

Any suggestions on what to look out for when I redo the timing? All of the write ups I’ve seen are when you take off the good but worn timing belt, make the marks on the old belt and copy them onto the new belt and then install the new belt. Am I going to have issues installing the new one because I won’t be able to do that? Slash is that question worth a new thread? New around these parts and I’ve done a fair amount of work on other Toyota’s but this is my first timing belt.

Thanks everyone for your help. The other timing belt write ups on here were super helpful as was OTRAMM’s YouTube video on the 2uz. Both versions were helpful the old and the updated one. I got it running yesterday after completing the following:

272,579

Timing belt

Water pump

Pulley’s and tensioner

Camshaft seals

Crankshaft seal

change Engine Oil & filter

Intake air filter

Thermostat

Serpentine belt

Coolant swap

Heater Ts

Great to hear! Has to feel good to finally have that monkey off your back.

You can say that again lol. Transported it across the pacific to have it sitting in my driveway for a month while I gathered parts and worked on it piecemeal. I went to turn it over and it stumbled and died a few times and I almost died inside. There was one baby hose into the air box that the clamp wasn’t tightened. Got back in, let the fuel pump kick on, hit the gas a few times and she turned right over thank sweet baby Jesus

Those OTRAMM videos are great. I did this project last year and had a similar experience, finished the job and went to start but it wouldn’t turn over. In my case it was a dead battery. Was a great feeling to finally hear it start again when I got a new battery in.
