This question is vague at best I know but here it goes..

Anyone know what the CFM requirements would be for an electric fan to replace the stock one on a 22re w/3 row radiator?:meh:

Using the taurus fan is an excellent option, on a 2 core. never done it with a 3. Unless your truck is a turbo, you dont even need 3 cores.

different years ( i dont know for certain ) had shorter widths. i uses 2 different years of fans, one taller than the other. both worked on 1st and 2nd gens.

I have a Black Magic Fan on both my '85 and '86 trucks and they work great. Got a spare BM fan I pulled off a wrecked truck in my spare parts bin if you're interested.:)

thanks for the info. I run the 3 because it started getting hot as soon as I tucked my winch up in the grill and the 22re is not exactly stock either. Cheap fix since my 2 core was shot anyway.

I think it's worth converting over to E fan just to get rid of having to pull those dang 4 10mm fan clutch/ water pump pulley bolts! :bang:

EVERY TIME I do one, I say I'll fix it and never do it again... but do I? no...

I used to have a 14" fan on my single core Griffin radiator. I could fit one 12" or (2) 9" fans with the new radiator (not enough room between the radiator and the front cross member for the 14"). I did some math on how much coverage the fans would give on the radiator:
1x14" fan = 153 sq.in.
1x12" fan = 113 sq.in.
2x9" fans = 127 sq.in
So 2x9" fans it is then - combined they pull 22 amps when they first start spinning, but settle down to 10 amps at full speed & I haven't had any issues yet

BTW - these were all generic ebay fans, so while I wouldn't trust the CFM numbers here they are
the 14" fan was supposedly 1700 cfm
the 9" fans are supposedly 1000 cfm

Time for my gross over-generalizations at specific markets....

A) Almost all aftermarket fans suck.
B) Never use a pusher fan
C) The factory clutch fan will use less power and work more efficiently than an electric.

If for whatever reason you decide to go for an electric fan, run a quality OEM one (like a taurus, with a 80+amp continuous duty solenoid... a good one to buy would be a 100amp tyco/kilovac contactor (http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?SKU=45M6264&CMP=AFC-GB100000001)).

As far as aftermarket fans go.. SPAL is the only quality manufacturer I have used. Always thought that the black magic (and others) were junk.

Mark VIII's have the same fan as the taurus. I agree with the aftermarket fans being junk. I used a couple (2700 & 3000 CFM) on my landcruiser and they didn't work for crap. Picked up a contour dual fan and worked like a dream. You can get a controller from DC Controller, they are waterproof and work really, really well.

The SPAL PWM controller works pretty well too FAN-PWM

using that contactor is a good option. however, much too expensive.
using the junkyard fan on a budget build, calls for a budget way to safey operate the fan.

i used a constant duty solenoid. I got it from NAPA for less than $20.
it looks similar in design to the typical Ford starter solenoid.

just sayin its the budget build route
