Any good Toyota shop can do it, but it's $$$$$$ because you'll have to swap you entire harness out.
The other parts can be had for a fair price, but it take a long time to disconnect and pull the donor harness, disconnect and pull the one it's replacing, install it, reconnect it, troubleshoot it. I as quoted 16 hours shop time on the wiring alone.

I removed and repaired just the engine portion of my 22RE EFI harness on my 4Runner, just the removal took about an hour, the repairs took about 4, the reinstall and bolt engine parts back on another hour. I would do the conversion but only if I had ALL the parts. Keep I mind that the parts are going to be old, you would more then likely want to open the harness and check the splices, the FI splices can cause problems, as well as replace the injector connectors as most of them are old and brittle. That is just the engine part of the loom, don't forget about the relays and junction boxes, dash loom, D/S engine loom, fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel supply and return lines. I would say that 16 hours plus would be accurate, plus the time it would take to gather up all the parts.

By the time you go through the effort of a 22r to 22re swap, why not spend the few extra dollars on a bigger engine? 3rz, 5vzfe or a Chevrolet LS v8?

Agreed.
If I were to do any kind of swap, I'd go Diesel with a 3L/5L, 1KZ, ora Cummins, or drop in a Ferd Essex 4.3 V6.

I hope for a diesel for The Mule in the distant future, and maybe someday making a "T-150" out of a first-gen 4Runner and an F-150 with the Essex Six. Both of those would be out of this world.

that is a good question for some one who does not have all the 22re parts i have, but i did the r to re swap because i had 95% of what i needed already, that pesky gas tank was a bitch to find though.

X2. If I had it to do over i would have swapped in the 2.7 4cyl. There is a company that makes engine mounts as well as an exhaust cross over tube, still a bit of a PITA but the gains are worth it. The 22RE while a very good reliable engine is still limited in that it is based off of old technology, AFM rather them MAF, SOHC 2 valve rather then DOHC 4 valve, and none OBDII. The 2.7 will give better MPG and power as well as last just as long as a 22RE. Either way good luck!

The 22re swap is not complicated especially for a beginner and no major expenses are needed or fabrications. And if the motor is good it will get the job done while a fancier swap has more uncertainties and expenses. Besides I think it will take longer to convert to any other engine. Besides it would be easier to find a donor. I have been trying to find a tacoma donor and no luck so far. I missed two already, one wrecked (3rz) and anothe one with a bad tranny (2rz).
