I am strongly thinking of buying the lowest mileage (10-20k miles would be nice) 2021 non-HE in grey or silver metallic and parking it for now. Not as an investment, but as a replacement. No, my current 200 is no where near retirement (heck, neither is my 60 and 100). But it is one serious accident away from being totaled and I realize that. It could be stolen sitting on the streets of Seattle. Lots of things. After what I have seen with the new Sequoia, LX600, GX550, and LC250, I have just no interest in any other vehicle. I'm this way with fly rods, running shoes, etc as well. I always want a backup to replace my favorite gear because, with planned obsolescence, you never know if you can get a replacement that is of the same quality.

Am I nuts?

That's not unreasonable if you can afford it, but I would recommend driving it every few days to keep things lubricated and the rubber can move once in a while. Prices should go down a bit but they are holding very strong HE or not.

Apologies for the tangent…

How? I can’t find the constant noise my 2nd row seat makes. I’ve tightened every bolt and laid some foam underneath the seat. It still makes noise and seems to have quite a bit of play in it.

My second row has been out for more than a year, but when it was installed I didn’t have any rattles. The one that can happen is quite common on the 200-series, the passenger seat headrest, but if it stays all the way down in my case it doesn’t make a peep.

I am parking my LC as we speak…drive it once or so a week. It still ages. Still need maintenance. Still need insurance. Still drinks a lot of gas when you turn it on. :D

I just can't make up my mind at the moment. Lately I'm feeling kind of lukewarm on Toyota's entire refresh on the truck/suv side of things. On one hand I definitely want something new but with the V35A being a reliability wildcard it makes me think if I'm going to roll the dice on something like that there are plenty of more modern, fun options out there to drive than a Toyota/Lexus product. There's alot I like about the 250 but still need to drive one.

On the other hand while there are things I don't like about the 200 I admit there is also nothing else quite like it on the road and for me that means something. If I could find what I feel is a fair deal on a squeaky clean, like new example of what I currently have I would strongly consider buying the same vehicle again and just dealing with it's shortcomings.

Go with your gut on this one.

Given how rarely I buy vehicles, coupled with the rate of decline in quality and reliability of quite literally EVERY car maker, adding two, low-mile 200s to the stable was the best decision I ever made.

your probably nuts but I think you have company. I do this with some spare parts that I have already replaced or that I know are in the future of a truck I plan on going 400k miles or more in. I've done this with other gear too that may not be available in the future (running shoes are an example).

I have thought about the "spare/backup 200". Especially after totaling my last one and having to go buy and rebuild the current one. I seriously considered keeping the totaled salvage 200 as "parts rig". In the end, that was $20K and garage space that I decided wasn't justifiable for me. A 10K mile, 2021 "spare 200", may makes sense, if a 200 is the best and only vehicle for you, you believe you will likely have to replace it eventually, and you don't want to buy the same 200 with 150K mikes 10 years from now as a replacement.

One thing my friends and family consistently ask me is why I keep and drive my Land Cruisers for ever. I show them this short film some friends of mine put together for Mountain Hardware 10 years ago. Substitute my Land Cruiser for their Volvo and you'll understand everything about why I drive Land Cruisers for decades.

650 miles later I’m back home. Some observations:
Even though it’s “dated” the nav/entertainment stack works fine. Nav received traffic info and I used that all the way through without touching Waze.
Radar cruise works great but disengages below 30mph?? Spoiled by the system in the wife’s Benz.
For a body on frame truck this thing is super comfy. No squeaks or rattles and it eats up freeway miles, averaged 19.5 the way down.
I wish the fuel tank was bigger.
Hatch is great for picnics at truck stops.
Coolbox is awesome. Kept two large gatorades cold for hours.
Ran fine on 87 octane.

I had some initial remorse spending this much on a vehicle (my biggest car purchase to date) but after today I am sold on this thing. It rocks.
Next week I have an appointment with a PPF shop and also a consult for some suspension/wheel/gear parts. But honestly I want to wheel it stock for a month or two before I drop any money into it.

Thanks again for your insight.

Congrats!

My view: get the PPF done as early as you can, otherwise yes, get to know it before you spend too much money on mods.

I covered my entire truck in PPF before I started wheeling aggressively and I’m so happy I did. There would be major loss of paint, particularly on the passanger side if I hadn’t. For some that’s a source of great pride, and I get it, but I just like knowing I can clean it up and have it shine despite the adventures…

Agreed. His content is terrible, he borrows from others, and he seems ill informed.
So the Toyota massive engine recall is fake news? People with broken down Tundra are lying?

I get that we are all Toyota fanboys but….

My opinion is that he borrows content from others without making any significant contributions of his own. His discussion of technical aspects like the ladder frame in the V35 engines reveals that he does not have a deep technical understanding of his topic. That is my opinion, you may disagree.
Others on YouTube (Tinkerer's Adventure and Automotive Press come to mind) express their opinions and deliver their content in a much less inflammatory/clickbait manner, demonstrate a deeper understanding of the fine aspects of their topics, and do so with a humility which is refreshing.
YMMV, to each their own. Just giving my two cents.

I would get the non-HE. The cool box is my favorite thing ever, you will love it once you have it. I don't use the third row, very simple to remove, but handy in case I ever need it.
30k versus 60k miles might as well be the exact same thing.

Back to the OPs question, between HE and non-HE, I was in the same situation and decided to bite the bullet and go with the HE. I already owned and sold a Base LC 2018 in the past and wanted the "factory mods" that come with the HE.

I would say it really depends on what you want to do in the future. If there is a slight chance you will sell this truck in the future (even if in the mid to long term), I would definitely spend the extra $20k and get the HE. Those are the ones that will hold value in 5, 10 years.

However, if your plan is to marry this truck and throw in $20k in mods, just buy a non-HE and never part ways with it, because if you do, you will never recover the $20k in mods. Actually, you will probably have a lower appraisal because of the mods. Very few people feel comfortable in buying a modified offroad truck without knowing who did the changes and how it was off-roaded.

This is really like the discussion in the 4Runner forums between buying a TRD Offroad or a TRD PRO. The same argument applies.

TRD Pro has real off-road suspension and other useful goodies.

LC HE has spectacular rims with a useless basket............
I never understood the basket. How many HE’s run around with that thing still up there? I assume very few.

I have an old Yakima Basketcase that I threw on top of my roof and it’s been pretty useful. I throw firewood up there, beach chairs, etc. It’s nice to free up some interior cargo space. Matter of fact, I’ve loosely been shopping around for a Mega Warrior. You still have yours, @Artie? I may be interested. I’m down in Athens not far from you.

Same. It’s a half assed attempt at something useful. Makes a ton of noise at highway speeds too.

Mine is long gone.

I hadn’t considered firewood up there. I’m also hight challenged so climbing up to grab stuff out of it, especially if it’s in the middle, would require an effort I may not be able to muster.

You need a truck. 😊
