I know EDIC is just an anagram of headache, but I have still plenty of problems with my '86 HJ60, and I relate it to the EDIC. I really hope somebody can help me (again) on this issue.

First of all, about 10 times out of 50, nothing happens when switching the key to the 'on' position (no lights, no fan, no clicks - nothing). Yes, you can start the starting engine, but the diesel dies as soon the key is back into the 'on' position. This problem seems to get worse when the engine is hotter (oil viscosity?), then it refuses service 30 times out of 50.

And since a couple of days, the engine also quits when idling, altough I have increased the idling revs somewhat to keep the batteries charging even during idling (I have lots of auxiliaries in the car).

Any ideas what to do? I put also a picture of the engine in this post, maybe somebody is able to point things out?

Many thanks,

Dieter

1. Clean it .. :D
2. Oil it .. :D

I thought it was related with oil press .. when your engine is hot you have less oil press . .. coz is hot ..

1. Temp on your area . ?
2. Oil viscosity that you use .. ?

I use 20W-50 ( Castrol ) here in Panamá with 30ºC day and 95% humidity. At idle I have 80 PSI ( oil press ) in mornings .. engine cold for sure .. and throught the day aprox 25 - 30 PSI mi idle speed is 650 rpm ..

any degreaser is fine.

The no power problem to me sounds like it is just an ignition switch all screwed up. I don't think its edic related. You mention no fan, lights etc. So no power when in the on pos. Look at replacing the ignition switch.

I would agree with the idea that it's the ignition. When I pulled out my starter recently several of the points where the wires were slodered to the ignition were broken or almost broken. They don't have to much room to move, so it could just be that as you drive they shake loose and don't make a good connection.

As for the EDIC and the engine shutting off- maybe the low oil pressure sensor is bad? You could always check that as well.

Paramaribo where we live is about 5 degrees north of the equator (South-America), so it's hot with high humidity, just like Panama I suppose (= plenty of   required!).

I used a Shell single grade SAE 50 for years, but we have won 30 liter of Shell's synthetic 15W50 in a rally last year, which I am using now. The engine seems to be more smokey with the multigrade, but with 210,000 km this is not abnormal really. Oil pressure is always OK, even with a hot engine working hard in the sand.

Cleaning is for sure a good advice, altough we have here only 1000 km paved road (no joke), and about 10,000 km mud, sand, caoline, bauxite, or a combination of these (bauxite is a great alternative for Lock-tite, especially for emergency brake systems...). But let's give it a try.

As for the ignition switch: I have measured the voltage output at the different key positions, and I get an appropriate output even when the engine won't start and nothing works (except for the starter engine) .

The low oil pressure is an option for sure. Could you point out where the sensor is mounted, so I can have a look at it?

Thanks,

Dieter

I think it was Lowenbrau and Behemouth who suggested the way to eliminate gound as the issue is to take some jumper cables, and ground the EDIC motor on the engine to the chassis or better yet the negative terminal. If it stops doing the funky chicken you know to look into pathways.
