I had a great time. I guess my first attempt at camp stew was a hit. I left half a pot to go to the camp fire and came back and it was gone. At least there was enough for Anna to get her fur covered. I'll try a dessert next year. Really nice to see everyone again. Especially my fellow wagon driver Shirtless Burl.:D Bask in the glory Burl, bask in the glory.

ARRRGH! Oh nooooo. Not another pig flop, I hope everyone is alright! Silly pig, napping in the trail...

Looks like folks had a blast again. Is there anyway for a pig lover to purchase a t-shirt, even if they did not attend the run? I wear last year's shirt with pride frequently. :)

Thanks guys!
OINK! OINK!

Pig run 2008

Well, another pig run in the books.............this year was the fewest pigs participating but it was nevertheless a great time. Rausch Creek is a great place to wheel- something for everyone and not too expensive. Even thogh I know the park fairly well there's always something new for me there.

I was quite pleased with the attendance- a goodly number but better yet, high quality participants!!!! We had nine trucks Friday and I think 21 on Saturday, a good turnout and enough to scare the jeepers a bit! Friday saw us split into two groups- blue/green/some black and then thenother group, da animals! Saturday saw three groups, or was it four? I was a follower Friday (thanks to Joe Mylie the new trail leader) and Saturday led a small group.

The weather was damn near perfect. Saturday afternoon we had a hard downpour for about twenty minutes but it passed and the sun came out shining brightly. Saturday was perfect, weather in the high 70's/low eighties, a drastic improvement from last year!!! Friday there were only a few other small groups in the park, Saturday saw more jeeps but I saw no congestion in the park at all. We couldn't have asked for more.

The T shirts came out great, I believe everyone was pleased with the design. I do have shirts available- $15 each, only size is XL. I also have a few XL from last years ride, and also have a few XL gray Knights of the Iron Pig T shirts. Buyers pay postage. Hit me direct at shmukter@pa.metrocast.net.

It was the last hurrah for Jeff Dozier in his capacity as the president of the ALCA. The club is as informal as one can be, and still get guys to pay dues. Jeff pretty much deserves all the credit for starting this club and getting it to where it is. The members are a pretty good and diverse group- and Jeff's energy brought us all together. We'll be sorry to see him go but I'm sure he'll be back wheeling at rausch, maybe even for the pig run next year. Thanks for your efforts, Jeff!

I didn't stay around to sample Sean's cooking but heard that it was good. If the pot got emptied, the stew was good. Jeff ordered pizza that was delivered right to our camp spot- a novel idea and a success to be certain. I must say everyone seemed to really enjoy the pizza.

The camping was excellent. Bob Bascomb and Dan Friedlander got to Rausch Thursday afternoon and nailed down the best camping spots for the pig run members. They got rained on a bit Thursday after setting up camp but it passed through pretty quickly. The guys who stayed at Camp-Awhile enjoyed their stay. I camped at CampAwhile Friday night and must say I've never spent an unenjoyable night there. It's quiet, clean, and has good services and a great pool for the kids. There's a great diner about two miles from CampAwhile and you can get to Rausch from the campground without driving on the interstate. Tom Humphries, Dominic and their friends and kids stayed at the Comfort Inn in Pine Grove- the rate for people wheeling at Rausch is $58.50 and the Comfort Inn is very nice, next to Arbys and McD's, and has two gas stations nearby. Any place but Echo Valley seems to be just fine, depends on how much (if any) money you want to spend.

Oh yeah, the piggy incident. Saturday morning we left the staging area six strong- me in the lead, trailed by Don Waters, Joe Mylie, Brian O'Laughlin. Tom H in his new (to him, Jeff's old) 55 and Dominic in his 62. Went down behind the old office, up Jotters Way, then down L3. I took one of the short cuts up the hill, and remember saying to Matt Reed that the trail was far gnarlier than last time I tried it. Got to the big rock in the middle and in going around it got my driver tires down into the rutted out area next to the rock, and got my passenger tires up onto a large stump. Been there before without a problem. Figured, even though we had a good lean going, that I'd drive right off the stump. Wrong. Darn thing leaned a little more and just laid over slowly as you can imagine. Nobody hurt, Matt and I crawled out through the passenger window.

After assessing the situation Don drove up the trail parallel to the one I was on and spooled out his winch cable. We choked around the frame in two spots and after I crawled back in behind the wheel he yanked the old girl back onto her tires. Hit the starter, engine turned a few times and lit right up. I drove her up the hill without futher incident.

The roof landed on a stump and got kinked badly. Blew out the big rear side window. Dented the quarter panel slightly but it ain't noticeable. Front fender got crashed in hard- top and bottom- and the hood got kinked so that it is not really usable any longer. Front turn signal of course is smashed as is the fresh air inlet grille. I'm gonna fix her- Tom H has the fender and parts, and my neighbor the body man is gonna take care of the roof. With any luck I'll be back to normal by the end of September. I wheeled the rest of the day without incident and drove the old girl right up the interstate and home with no problems.

All in all it was a good get together. Four pigs showed- Brian Koerner, Tom Humphries, Joe Mylie, and myself. Joe and I have been at every east coast pig run. Jeff LaCarruba missed hsi first and he and his wife just brought their second daughter home from China. Quality, not quantity, as the man said! Gary S
