A little late i know, but with 38 inch tires, isn't a 4spd adequate with the stock gearing?

My friend put 35's on his 82BJ40 and said that putting the 5spd in was a waste. He mentioned that he never used 5th gear.

I guess this is more of a question than a comment.

Thought a shop did this conversion and the 2F mounts do not line up with the 12HT????

"easiest" might be 2H or 12HT, you could keep your current tranny, the intake/ exhaust arrangement will be similar to the 2F and the engine mounts might even line up :D

the 4 speed has a higher 1st gear which really sucks with 35" boots. the 5 spd although you can not use the 5th gear except on gentle down hills is a better gear box with a lower 1st gear for better crawl. add to that the 2.48 from the auto trannies and stock 4.11 gears and you have a very nice setup for wheeling around here.
my recommendation for this swap is the 12HT or the 2H. but if you are swapping out the 4 spd for a 5 spd then go with the PZ<HZ<HDT set ups. much quieter and after wheeling my PZJ70 for the weekend on 35s i was thoroughly impressed with the performance. not once did i need "more power"...

do some research and let us know what you decide.
cheers

Can someone enlighten me a little on the 1HD-T bolt pattern. I know they used the A440F autos behind them, similar to an FJ80 and a FJ62 so I assumed early 1HD-T's have the same pattern as a 2F. Am I wrong? Are they a weird early auto with a different bolt pattern?

I got a 74FJ40 and I'm going the 12H-T root. Good power, can be tweaked, my old 4spd tranny bolts upto it, and I think my engine mounts will work.

Ummm... pretty sure the 1HD-T did not come bolted to the A440F, the JDM HDJ81 got the A442F right from 90 up, albeit an early version with a single solenoid in the valve body etc.

Have a question - ask an expert. I am getting a 1HD-T from Stedman. How the hell do I bolt it up? H151 and that's it? Doh!

Pretty much.. If you want a 5speed, the H151 is the only one that came bolted to it from Toyota. You CAN put a 1HZ input shaft into an H55F and then bolt together with an isuzu 300mm clutch disc. If the 1HD-T came bolted to an Auto then you also need a flywheel and clutch pressure plate etc etc etc....
