early f head on a 2f

I did the Late F head on the early 2F block thing...it just bolts together.
I suppose you could put an older waterpump on a 2F. But why? The F manifolds will go on a 2F head with a little tiny bit of work. Flywheel, starter, sure they'll swap. I think.

While we are at it. IF you bought a 2F shortblock how much of the F motor parts could swap over

water pump, carb, intake, exhaust, flywheel, starter, etc

Would everything swap over? Or would it be necessary to have the 1F heads to use everything?

I am running this combo, in my 1974 FJ40, I have a 1976 2F block, with a 1974 F Head. I got this idea from Mark Whatley form the Cruiser mailing list. It does bump your Compression up to 9.5 to 1. I love the power, I hate the fule mileage.

The head swap/CR gain will not reduce fuel economy... i tmakes the engine ore efficient... any increas in fuel use is from other causes... ( like maybe enjoying the pwer gains... :)

It is not a tremendous gains in power by itself... not sure that it would be noticed in an engine that was otherwise unchanged... but it works very well with a longer duration cam...

Nothing like freshly cleaned parts! nice pics.

I understand what you're saying ---the compression increase is only a part of the equation. Still the 2F does seem to offer room for a little improvement before getting into the major $ per HP equation eh?

I think it might be interesting to see what I can do with a 2F so it's not just about perf otherwise I could drop in a SBC.

for now I'd like to keep it pretty simple to get up and running but later I may do more--got some good examples to follow here on mud that's for sure.

2FE-TI w/a nice cam.... beautiful approach

I have the parts, just not the time... but I cannot justify the expense when I have SBCa and 1FZs that I can use or modify and use instead :(

BTDT, dude. But no matter how much you paint and polish that turd, it's still just a straight six and sucks on the long uphills. Of course, it does SHINE (I mean, it's like magic) on the trail, idles down to nothin' and keeps running...

Mark W---lookin at your Avatar---was that your rig I saw in the trail recovery story,, in a stream in Alaska right? Great Post! I was in Anchorage in May for my first trip to Alaska. Saw a Moose just outside downtown-fantastic!

Pighead----Polishing the turd? That's funny for real!---not long ago I was posting about the prep on my frame and someone posted we were Just Gold Plating an anvil

So after all the time work and expense I'll be able to boast a gold plated anvil sporting a polished turd!

:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool: LOL!

Of course you're right with a little work a SBC gives a lot of performance and plenty have done it already

Nice vid!

by the way what's a E-TI? Turbo?

Justifying the expense is hard I saw some things I'd love to do if money were no object but doing the right thing within your budget--- now that's the trick!

Really no trick to it...set your budget HIGH and do your own work.
No, really. You can build your own 'Cruiser engine. You might need some new tools (oh, dear) and you will need the absolutely biggest, bestest engine stand you can find, but the assembly of an F or 2F is very simple. The FSM will walk you thru it. Multiple posts on 'Mud will walk you thru it. Specific technical questions will be answered here with astonishing speed.
You will need the best old-school machine shop in your area. Look for old people with gray hair behind the counter. Listen to them. Check back with us to make sure they're right.

I'm with Pighead on this. The 2F is so cool when it idles down to 400 rpm and just keeps pulling the truck up and over something nasty. Really unique for a carburetored motor. It is like magic when the going is slow crawling. I am hoping the 2FE would be the same, only with fuel injection.

I am itching to build a 2FE since I have all the parts and just want to see if I can make it work. My FJ40 could use some more freeway power, and seems like the perfect recipient.

Engine Build

Tools?---- check--oh yeah got tools-pro ones
Old Fart?---Check---yeah I am one
Do own work?--Check---Engine assembly is no sweat

Budget? Hold on I need to talk to:princess:

When we are talking what fits and doesn't fit and some of these home brewed performance recipes combining parts ---that stuff is great!

On the old farts I guess I'll say this---generally speaking experience counts with me but sometimes there is no fool like an old fool

After running several shops with about 150 techs it only takes me about 30 secs to tell if youg buck knows his stuff or is talking smack;) ha ha

Yup I'm hearing you guys--will be reading up!

been skimming over trollhole, matt, and some of the other builds
I sure would like to be up and running though I know I wont be able to leave it alone after that and the Engine improvement is an obvious choice

me dong th recovery.. nit my rig... I know better than to do what he did to get there... unfortunately at that point in time his river crossing experience was limited to following me across rivrs... 4 or 5 back in the group... h was out on his own that day ;)

not a stream

full on river...

I have moose in my yard several times a year... still... when I first moved to this house we used to have bear occasionally... in some parts of the city of anchorage they have grizzly bears in the yards all the time. a s***load of moose live in downtown anchorage year round

2F... electronic fuel injection... turbocharged with intercooler

I love the 2F, it has alot of power, for small tires. (35" and under) I have rebuilt my engine for the second time now. I took the engine to 30 over, new pistons, new performance cam, new crank and balanced rods, new high flow header, custom exhaust, and a Weber carb. She pulls very hard for a 2F.
