Surprisingly it shuts of just fine. Maybe I didn't get as much in as I thought second time around. I was chasing cooling problems that were resolved by a new oem radiator.

Next time I have it out I will drain and fill with 45 ml. I will be replacing belt as pm soon. Maybe just pull the clutch then.

Overfilling will just make it stay "on" full time, wont change how much torque it can deliver.
Old thread and a ton of info in different places on this so apologies if it's in the "search" feature somewhere. Can someone cofirm the amount of 10k fluid needed to fill a drained new blue aisin 97 fj80 fan clutch? I'm seeing 45-50 ml but not sure if that's on the old black clutch only or on the new blue models as well. TIA.

That is a good number for 80 series clutches.

I see this thread was brought back up recently.. Just wanted to share that I recently swapped out an original black hub clutch from my 93 to a new blue hub aisin fht-004 and that was a total mistake..Right away on my koso slim temp gauge the temps would range on average of 5-10 °F hotter....First mistake, was swapping a good unit (with old worn out oil) black hub clutch for a unmodified stock blue hub with oem oil... Should have at least drained and refilled the new unit with 15k oil... When I swapped out the black hub, I actaully had some 15k oil stashed away and decided to drain and refill the unit with 45ml of it... After seeing these temps, I plan on swapping back my black hub clutch with 15k oil... Was just windering if the 15k oil with 45ml is too thick for the black hub aisin to operate properly? I see almost everyone use 10k for the earlier model black hubs...

So i was on the fence on rebuilding. Unsure if i had an original clutch or not, plus playing with it in 110* weather did not interest me, so i bought the witts end blue to just be done with it. I had a lot of work to do on my 4runner as well, so i needed my truck to not overheat.

Here is s comparison of my old with the new blue, the old one was tiny!

15K will work, has been done with good results, be sure to check, watch belt tension and wear!

That is a Haydon/Imperial POS, not worth anything but scrap.

Thanks Kevin... Was really hoping you would chime in..... As far as belt tension, I tend to adjust the tension on them a little more on the loose side rather than tight.. Definitely keep an eye on it...

Just a follow up........................Holy sheeeeeeetttt! I Took off the newly installed Blue Hub fan clutch from 80 to reinstall the old Black Hub clutch with 15k oil as mentioned in some posts above and WOW! That thing pushes some major air. Never heard a start up roar that loud.. Took a 30 min drive in low 80F weather and temps never climbed above 187F.. Kicking my ass for buying a wimpy blue hub fan and not doing this mod years ago, never felt the need until recently when I seen the 80 running hotter than ever before during these hot summer months.. I will keep the blue hub for back up, but some 30K oil is going in pretty soon for sure... Lesson learned, never install a newer type aisin fan clutch without swapping out oil for thicker one..

About those belts... Doing silly stuff like this was how we found how much better some aftermarket belts are, factory belts couldn't take it for long... :hillbilly:

Great! I guess I have some belts to swap pretty soon? What brand is more durable, always heard everyone mention to go with oem belts for no squeaks and longevity . How long do you think the oem belts would last? Mine are approx a year old with less than 15k on them...

Don't know how long they will last, you may have better luck with them than we have? From the price and the way they wear, my guess, they are old school rubber, like most cheap belts. Better belts are made from synthetic rubber, less glazing, cracking, better grip, longer life, etc. Have had good results with Gates XL, available in a matched set, but any of the better grades should last longer than dealer belts. Expect to pay significantly more, but better than changing them often.

Hello,
There has been some speculation as to whether the rest of the world received the same clutches with different fluids.
The following information pertains to GCC spec FZJ80s
This is a black hub Aisin fan clutch from a GCC 80 series (my 80 has a blue hub Aisin - I have not removed it to check what it is inside)
As far as I can tell it has never been opened before and the fluid is original
No idea what viscosity it is but it seems close to the 15K cSt fluid I picked up - perhaps Toyota OEM filled them with 10K for GCC countries?
FYI at the scrapyards I found green, orange, pink, black and blue fan clutches.

Sorry for the double post but I think this information is unique and helpful to those investigating what Toyota did to the fan clutches used for hotter climates.
Just opened up the fan clutch that I believe is original to the car
It is a blue hub that is exactly the same as the black hub, only difference is hub colour
Silicone oil is definitely thinner than the black hub but it seems that it is set to open up sooner. I definitely had to heat the black hub spring for a lot longer duration for it to move.

I'm jealous, in all my years here in CA I have only seen 2 FJ or FZJ80's in the scrap yards here :(

Well then you're more than welcome to come over here and take as many parts as you want. That is before the Saudis finish all the parts! Its a real problem now. They really really love the 80 series.

UPDATE
Tried the early black/blue hub with 16.5K cSt silicone oil (did NOT modify the opening temperatures - they probably drifted from new), new Taiwan made radiator, new non-OEM fan shroud with adhesive backed weatherstripping all around shroud + radiator + radiator/hood opening and an OEM thermostat with one 3mm hole. OEM water pump with 300K kms and using 60/40 Toyota pink coolant. OEM AC condenser with A LOT of bent fins but cleaned it with foaming condenser cleaner (Parker Foam Max)
OEM AC condenser fan is not working and can't find its relay anywhere so I relied on the fan clutch only for cooling.

AC temperatures range from 45F-65F in the hottest country on earth during the day/night in moderate traffic with stop lights.
Water temps probably topped at 210F using an IR gun at top water hose (could not measure while driving obviously - a conservative estimate)
On the highway it probably drops to around 185-195 during the day and lower end at night (180ish)
If I keep the RPMS at around 2.5-3k when driving around (manual transmission) at low speed the temperature drops FAST. The fan clutch definitely moves A LOT of air.

Conclusion - Definitely the best cooling mod you can do for an 80 series - a necessity if you live anywhere that has a hot climate. While others struggle with their electric fan conversions and twin ac condenser fans I'm keeping cool with just a fan clutch. If it works in the hottest country on earth I'm sure you'll be fine wherever you are.
