Driveshaft spline engagement

I just discovered the engagement of my rear drive shaft is not good. These were modified years ago by a driveline shop, obviously not right.

I'm wondering how much of the second set of splines need to be engaged in the tail piece? Or more precisely how much room do I need to leave to allow some movement due to Spring compression?

I would think 3/4 to 7/8 of the splines....leaving about an inch worth of compression.

If it’s a 62, then that shaft center section is from another car manufacture… early splines were quite coarse….someone at some time replaced that driveshaft.

Jack it up to full droop, measure/mark. Then chain it down to the bump stop measure/mark

Not so sure about that.
You may be thinking about front axle splines.
