NorCalDoug said:I'll look for a belt tension tool gizmo once I leave the office.
and relax...Brentbba said:Great write-up Doug. Image in my mind of you falling off your daughter's stool will be emblazoned in my mind all day - thanks! Too bad you aren't closer - my belts are squealling like a pack of mad monkey's. Due for a major tune-up in a couple of thousand miles anyway (about 1 1/2 months the way I drive) and was just going to let dealer do belts at the same time. After your write-up, my 1/2 banana skill set will find the $150 to let someone else do it. Need to learn tho.

skills do you?
mechanic and I admit it!
mechanic abilities...Mr. "Big Guns" Staplin - I'm surprised you had no problems getting those pipes in there -- it's a tight squeezeMTNRAT said:When I did mine, I did remove the battery tray. Really improves access. But Geez Doug, I had no problems fitting my large pipes into the nooks and crannies...
Thanks for the heads up Onur.beno said:Doug...
Don't remember if you all have NAPA's in the Valley, but they sell a belt tensioner tool that fits in the palm of your hand for about $10 IIRC
I tried it and it seems to be generally accurate about the deflection per the FSM (1/2" IIRC)...
NorCalDoug said:Brent,
That's the funny thing about the combination of this forum, the FSM and 1/2mechanic abilities...
Change a set of brake pads...install a battery...wire up some 12v outlets...the next thing you know, you start to think that you can do anything
The worst part of this job was getting access to the nuts and bolts. If you can reach them all, it's not a difficult job.
NorCalDoug said:Yep. I'm definitely removing the battery next time around.
It's not difficult, just damned hard to reach what you need to reach if you have big mitts like we do.
mechanic and I find that I'm too stupid to know what I can screw up and attempt almost anything including a valve adjustment and birf job.NorCalDoug said:Next I loosen the tensioner screw. Based on the various posts I read, I knew to loosen this guy until it's almost completely out. What a major pain in the ass it is to get to the end of this tensioner screw!!! I tried reaching in from the top and from below. There’s no good way to get to this thing. It's just in a very crappy location. Maybe I'll remove the battery box next time.
I know it won't take me 3 hours next time...but 15 minutes? Dude -- you're fastelmariachi said:I found that with all three of my 3/8" drive extensions end to end, I could easily come in through the fender curtain and get straight on the tensioning bolt head. Did you try that? Not to agitate you after a battle, but I changed all my belts in 15 minutes last time going that route.
