I don't know if anybody else is having this problem, but sometimes when I lock my doors with my key fob (this is on a 97 80, so it's the factory alarm with the key fob that is shaped like a coffin) everything will lock as normal. Then when I come back out to the truck, my doors are unlocked and the alarm is disarmed.

I don't think it's someone using the same freq as me, because it happens at differnt places at random times. Has this happened to anyone else? I would really hate to give up my keyless entry (what can I say, I'm that lazy) but I keep a lot of crap in my truck and thats a bit unnerving.

Couple of suggestions, you might try changing the battery, I know when I had my 90 4Runner it did that and I changed the battery. That seemed to take care of it. On my cruiser fob I have noticed that a lot of crud and lint built up around the buttons when I first got my cruiser. I used a like a needle or the sharp end of a thumb tack to clean out around the buttons, kept them from hanging up when I pushed them.

Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE that you locked it? :D

Seriously -- I used to have this happen to me. What happens is that you can get a false piezzo beep if you press the alarm button too soon after you close your door.

Slam door, press button vs. slam door, wait 1 sec, press button.

The false beep that I'm talking about lasts longer than the standard "I'm locking the rig" beep.

Test it yourself. A few iterations of the slam door, press button will get that false beep.

My "beeper" died a couple years ago. I now do a visual check of the passenger side door lock when pressing the alarm button, or I'll check a door handle if I don't have a view of the lock on the inside.

Since piezzo beeper died, I haven't had one single false locking incident.

Seems to be happening with my 96. I first noticed it a few weeks ago when it was parked for a few days at a fairly large company parking lot (with security patrols) while I was having a new roof put on the house. It was a little un-nerving to come back - hit the button and have it make only one beep.

I thought maybe I goofed, but have been careful and watching it since then. It's happened 3-4 more times.

(I'm pretty sure I'm loosing my mind and imagining things, but I think that's unrelated.)

You are lucky! :) I had to self-impose the death of my peizo.

Funny topic as I'm dealing with this on my g/f's Accord. It will continuously lock the doors for a minute after I lock the door w/ key.
It is either a bad solenoid or actuator. Not an LC, but maybe something similar w/ pwr locks... ? Just a guess

You might take a voltmeter to both and see if one of them is bad (actuator/solenoid)- if you don't have a simple problem like what Doug diagnosed.

Have a similar and maybe even more annoying issue. While Landtank and I were installing the OME lift on mine and the 4" on his, my truck decided to lock the doors on it self every time I shut the drivers door! Of course the first time we noticed this, I had tossed the keys in the center console, and hopped out of the truck, "click" and the truck locked itself  Luckily, Rick is an upstanding guy in his area and the cops were more then happy to come help us out with a fancy clothes hanger and rubber wedge. Here's the thing, it ONLY happens after heavy rains or lots of moisture in the air  I think its the alarm "brain" thats screwed.

Might have something to do with the door lock control module located inside the driver's door - moister, maybe?

That is exactly where I'm at. I'll def have to visual check/door check all the time now, thanks to NorCalDoug for that info. It could have been user error from the start. (Actually, I kinda hope so.)

A common problem with the key FOBs is the plastic that secures the battery breaks. If the battery moves around it will short mimicking you pressing the button. This happens mainly when you throw your keys in a purse.

Not saying you wear a purse or "Man bag", but this happened to my wife all the time. Take apart the FOB and check the plasic ring around the battery. A tell tale sign of this is premature battery life.

I don't think the problem is in the fob. I bought it from Toyota about 6 mo ago.
I don't have that problem, but was wondering if you have a nice stereo and any good stuff in the cargo area? Also wondering where you park the thing at night?;) :grinpimp:

Seach my post last week about a window. Aparently the door locks aren't doing much anyway!:flipoff2:

Chad, mine does this too, sometimes if I stand by the truck a while it will unlock with the fob in my pocket. I usually just check it when I walk away.

A simple problem I have found is that the system cycles between on-locked and off-unlocked, regardless of whether or not the doors have been locked manually or with the door switch. I have become used to using the door switch to lock everything when I get out with my old vehicles, now I catch my self locking the LX with the door switch and then hitting the alarm button, which ends up unlocking everything (sometimes, depending which cycle it is on).

The problem is, I think, that the locking system "remembers" what it did last. The last thing the system did was LOCK or the last thing the system did was UNLOCK.

It's clear to me what's happening...but it might be difficult for me to explain clearly...I'll give it a shot.

As we all know, the FZJ80, by default will lock doors when you turn the key in the ignition and will automatically unlock when the ignition is turned off (this seems to be the default -- it is something that can be turned off -- refer to your owner's manual for instructions).

If the occupant (the driver or one of the passengers) does something to the locks -- either manually unlocking a door or unlocking them all manually -- it disables the auto unlock feature temporarily. It's easy to test -- hop in your rig, insert key, turn the key in the ignition -- doors will lock; then manually unlock your door (I don't think you need to open it, but it might be the case), then remove the key from the ignition -- the doors will NOT auto unlock.

Now here's where the system gets "confused" -- the last thing it "remembers" doing was locking the doors. If you get out and press your fob to set the alarm, it will UNLOCK the doors (not set the alarm). If your piezo is working, you'll hear 2 chirps and your lights will flash twice. If you're like me...with a non-working piezo AND if you don't pay attention to the lights flashing, all you hear is the click of the door locks...you might assume that you locked the doors, when, in fact, you unlocked them all.

EDIT: Dang! Well...uhhh...what Ben said...
that's what I get for being distracted in the middle of writing something here...

this is also happening to mine. at first i was thinking it was just me not being sure if i locked it or not. it happens often enough that i started thinking it was the alarm going faulty. now that i see i am not alone, i think i'm going to get an aftermarket alarm.

Yup, me too. My 96 LC likes to lock itself - good girl! Just have to be mindful NOT to leave my keys on the seat or in the console. Doesn't do it every time but often enough for me to notice.

Isn't there an auto-arming feature you can enable? Wouldn't that ensure that the doors lock even if you don't hit the button? Or are we back to the issue of it auto-unlocking by mistake?

Mine is doing this too, and I'm sure I have been locking it. I hit the button, and get the locking sound, one flash of the lights, and everything is fine. Then, when I come back to the truck, it is unlocked. So far nothing's gone missing, but it's just a matter of time. I'm thinking that the button is getting pushed when it is in my pocket throughout the day. My rig sits just outside the window of my classroom, so it's definitely within range to pick up the alarm. I should enable the horn again so I would at least hear it beep if that is indeed what's happening.
