Noah....have you ever been in contact with a real Pit Bull?

my brother had 2 staffordshire bulls...a male and a female. male had to be sent away because he was too scary. and although the female is a nice dog and has never bitten anyone (my bro is very careful with her) my children are never allowed alone with the dog. notice the skull shape?...it is a factor in the incredible clamping force these dogs have, and it allows them to breathe out the sides of their mouths once they have clamped on. my brother had to use a broom handle to spread his male's jaws once he clamped on to a squirrel....and he wouldnt let go on command like he was taught. dog was gone the next day.

here's another bit of info that might be of interest:

Common dangerous dog breeds

When addressing the topic of "dangerous dogs", it is important to remember that no breed is guaranteed to be 100% bite-free or attack-free.
In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that 25 breeds of dogs were involved in 238 fatal dog bites from 1979-1998. More than 50% of the deaths for which the breed was known were caused by Pit Bull type dogs and Rottweilers.*
Due to the high cost of dog bite liability claims, some insurance companies have blacklisted certain breeds and are refusing to provide homeowners insurance to those who own these dog breeds. According to the Insurance Information Institute, liability claims have increased from $250 million in 1996 to $310 million in 2001.
"Blacklisted" breeds may include:

Pit Bulls Alaskan Malamutes Rottweilers Akitas Chow Chows American Staffordshire Terriers Doberman Pinschers Boxers German Shepherds Great Danes Siberian Huskies Wolf-hybrids Perro de Presa Canarios.
Any dog that has any of the above breeds in their lineage.

so, avoid the risk to others and your future income....just get a nice dog that barks. most all of them, like the standard poodle (they look much better w/o the foofoo haircut) will galdly die to protect u if they feel you're threatened and very few people will break into a house when they hear a dog

I'm not sure about dog bite statistics but 77% (approximately) of all dogs pass the temperment test, while a whopping 95% of pitbulls pass. As a breed the pitbull does better on the temperment test than retrievers, labs, dalmations, and almost any other "family friendly" breed there is. Please inform your mother that the german shepherd is bred to ATTACK PEOPLE while the pitbull is bred to attack DOGS. Oh, and expain that the reason that pits rarely bite people is BECAUSE OF not in spite of their selective breeding for fighting purposes. Tell her how a human-aggressive pit couldn't be safely fought and would be put down, so almost every trace of "human aggressive genes" was wiped out from this breed at one point. Oh, and look up that printout on the internet that has a picture of about 15 different breeds of purebred dogs and asks you to identify the pitbull. No one ever gets it right on the first try. Breed mis-identification is one of the 3 biggest problems facing our breed. And in spite of the fact that every flea-bag with a patch on its eye, or some scars, or a big head is labled a pit bull when it bites someone there still aren't numbers to back up the mindless sensationalistic propaganda spewed by our wonderful liberal media!

AMEN!!!!!!!!!

i like the Doberman, but i would be the first to admit that it's a dangerous breed! the are highly strung in the wrong way and also they need lots of constant training....

I disagree. They are thought to be a dangerous breed because of the stereotype they have gotten from television. They are excellent guard dogs and rarely attack unprovoked.

AMEN!!!!!!!!!

you are not gonna win this argument. Your dogs are dangerous and should be put down. You are making excuses, just like Eric did, and if really see the realm of how bad these dogs are you would understand there are no need for them. Is it ok that your dogs are breed to attack other dogs - does that make it better? You also say that PB's have a better pass % of temperment - if this is true then why do a higher % of PB breeds attack, maim, and kill??

PB's were made for one thing and that is to kill...

The requirements are such:

Needs to be a good guard dog, I want one that will rip the face off of an intruder, not just bark and make noise.

Any dog breed is dangerous in the hands of someone who thinks like this.

yes and no

yes, they have had bad press.... and yes they are excellent guard dogs....

no, "rarely attack unprovoked", only when trained correctly. i have seen a lot of wild untrained Doberman's who will attack another dog for no reason at all.

what ever....

Chuck Norris, although one bad ass American, is skeert of Pit Bulls.

same for pit bulls.

As with almost every dog, their attitude is 90% a result of how they are raised. People with wild untrained dogs are likely to have wild children.

googled dog bites by breed.....one of the hits was (i can't cut and paste it):
"animal care and control, city & county of san francisco
dog bite case report - count by breed
date range: 04/01/06 to 06/30/06"

62 dog bites

29 were from the mastiff group..
20 were from pit bulls (pure or mixed)
3 boxer
2 sharpei
4 rottweiler
1 st bernard

any need to say more?

The dogs that are most responsible

Merritt Clifton, editor of Animal People, has conducted an unusually detailed study of dog bites from 1982 to the present. (Clifton, Dog attack deaths and maimings, U.S. & Canada, September 1982 to November 13, 2006; click here to read it.) The Clifton study show the number of serious canine-inflicted injuries by breed. The author's observations about the breeds and generally how to deal with the dangerous dog problem are enlightening.

According to the Clifton study, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes are responsible for 74% of attacks that were included in the study, 68% of the attacks upon children, 82% of the attacks upon adults, 65% of the deaths, and 68% of the maimings. In more than two-thirds of the cases included in the study, the life-threatening or fatal attack was apparently the first known dangerous behavior by the animal in question. Clifton states:

If almost any other dog has a bad moment, someone may get bitten, but will not be maimed for life or killed, and the actuarial risk is accordingly reasonable. If a pit bull terrier or a Rottweiler has a bad moment, often someone is maimed or killed--and that has now created off-the-chart actuarial risk, for which the dogs as well as their victims are paying the price.

Clifton's opinions are as interesting as his statistics. For example, he says, "Pit bulls and Rottweilers are accordingly dogs who not only must be handled with special precautions, but also must be regulated with special requirements appropriate to the risk they may pose to the public and other animals, if they are to be kept at all."
