My guy Eric can climb and jump at least 5 feet maybe more.

Also he can dig. I disccovered it is almost impossible to contain him.

I have seen him climb over a 6 foot high chain link fence by putting in his feet and shimming up.

SO the vertical bars are a must. But how are you gonna enclose the bottom?

they won't be out there unsupervised -- the bottom rail will be like 1-2" off the ground --

I have some pretty lazy pups, so my fence is only 4 1/2 feet. Used 3x4 PT landscape timbers on end for the posts, wrapped them with the green mesh fencing, and have 3 2x6x8's spaced 1 foot apart.

Pretty simple post and rail fence with the mesh. Looks rustic and was fairly cheap. I waited till the PT posts were on sale for $2 ea, and the mesh cost about about 100 for a 150 foot run of it. The planking was the most expensive part.

The saint bernard does not really jump, so it is tall enough.

Agreed,

If you use chain link (hurricane) fencing, then you risk having your animals discover it can be climbed. Once they learn that....its "katie bar the door".

The vertical fencing you show looks excellent.

6 foot fencing "should" appear too challenging for the average dog of that breed. If you had "Rhodesian ridgeback's" I'd say be sure to put a top on it too.

That particular fencing should look very nice on your property, and the PB's will love having such a large area to exercise in.

Eric, You can actually place rocks around the bottom on the inside. That works for stoping the digging. I had to do that on one fence.

It's nice tho to not have to worry about the dog in the yard.

My dog now has a fifty foot cable to run on, works. But I have to look outside first to make sure we have no Moose here for a visit.

I have tried 6' wood before and my one dog would clear it easily.

I then went to a HOA that did not allow fencing and used "Invisible Fence" (a system with radio collars and buried wire) which worked phenomenally. One escape during electrical storm within first 2 months, then none for the remaining 3 years.

I would fence people/varmints out with an inexpensive fence and use the Invisible system for the dogs proper.

Ditto. We have an electronic pet fence system (DogWatch) that works great...takes care of jumpers for sure. So, when incorporated it'll make your regular fence choice easier and maybe less expensive since you won't need to go to 6'.

Easy solution....get a livestock fence charger and run a single string electric wire 12" below the top, with insulators that hold the wire 4-6" inside the fence. That'll shock the s*** outta them. Get a pulse model, it pulses the charge every second or so. As long as the dog has it's feet on the chainlink for a ground, it'll get zapped. Ahhhhhhhhhh, the beauty of electricity.

Fences are for untrained dogs due to lazy owners. :flipoff2:
