Do NOT Expect a Koyo 1918 From CARid

Do you monitor water temps real time or are you on the factory gauge only? How does it cool your engine down there in the inferno?

I just received a GPI Racing all alumnum radiator I got from eBay via China. @cjmoon put one in his 80 and it worked out but the one I have here is not fitting well at all (too small) and I don’t feel like spending time and money to make it fit right so I’m shopping again.

I don’t care for plastic tanks but a Toyota radiator or a Koyo A1918 are the two I’m considering now. The Ron Davis is north of a grand so that’s pretty much out and I don’t feel like trying anymore chinesium “Racing radiators”.
Factory gauge. Never an overheat in 24 years cruising the the great Mojave desert. I did see that needle climbing last month going up the Grapevine in mid July with 110* ambient though. It's not magic, but a very well built unit...night and day better than the CSF IMO.

You have run a copper CSF in the past? That is what I’m replacing. It’s well built and has spot on dimensions but it just can’t dissipate heat fast enough under heavier load situations even in moderate ambient temps.

You recommended it to me last year. Bought it and thought it was cheap looking/feeling compared to OEM. Shipped the CSF back and ordered OEM, which is much nicer. Never ran the CSF though...
 
Does anyone have real data/experience on the cooling capacity of the older designed copper core -66040 radiator opposed to the newer aluminum core -66081. The -66040 isn't sold by manny oem suppliers. My local dealer told me today that only 26 units of the copper -66040 exist in the USA. I read that others are having good luck with the Koyo A1918. I'm looking for real data on cooling capacity/quality and not which is the cheapest or can be delivered the quickest.

OEM Copper -66040, OEM Alum -66081 or the somewhat cheaper Koyo A1918
 
Someone on mud recommended this radiator. I purchased one and put it in my 94 a few weeks ago. I live in West Texas and it has been 100 degrees this week and it seems to cool very well. I don't have a scan guage but my ac isn't shutting off in the heat anymore.

Sit back, search and read and you will be rewarded with the most useless information on the internet.

That said, both iterations are readily available from Toyota no matter what the clowns at your parts desk say... or no matter what the useless internet sites say.

Don’t over think this. It’s just a damn radiator. Buy something and stop wasting time.

Just read a great series of articles on www.cgj.com and, apparently, a radiator isn't a radiator isn't just a radiator for several reasons. This decision is now a no brainer. I'm going with Aluminum whether its Koyo or Toyota.
 
I am base lining a 97 LX450 right now, a recent acquisition. Once I have "fixed" everything and drive the 6 cylinder for a time (not sure how long) I am planning a V8 conversion. My current aluminum 2 row looks pretty new and working fine, but if I need to replace it and in light of the fact I will do the V8 conversion, would I be better off with the 3 row Copper Toyota radiator? Will it handle the increased heat load of the V8?
 
My 91 OEM radiator blew up @ 218k, replaced with CSF unit and been nothing but headache....overheating on hill climbs, needle creeping up towards 3/4, etc etc. Bite the bullet and got a Ron Davis all aum. unit, and since been on 3 big trips up to the Sequoias and the rig runs 20 degree cooler with AC on full blast and never get over 200 F if i tried. Alum. radiator is the way to go for build rigs that requires extra cooling.
