Before I drive to St. Louis to pic up a 77 FJ40 for parts, does any one here have disc brake front axle they would want to part with for a reasonable price?

This may be a stupid question, but I thought that disk brakes did not start until 78'?

why i just happen to have all the components for a disc brake front axel...complete...assembly required...i bought them from eric intending to put them under the 45...the project direction has changed and these are available....pm me an offer

I was kind of wanting just to swap in an axle but if the price is right.......shoot me a pm with your phone # and we can talk about it.

Thanks

I have a fj40 4.11 third member with fine spline axles and a complete fj62 front axle. I was going to use the fj62 axle from the knuckles out to make a disc brake front end out of the fj40 3rd. It's already martacked.

It's available if you're interested. I have zero time and no garage space so it needs to go.

The FJ62 front axle had 4.11's.. all parts wil interchange onto the FJ40 axle or use the original chunk in the FJ40 which would give you a spare 3rd. The FJ62 axle will meet your needs.

fj62 axle is a little wider, isn't it? I haven't measured but it looks like it's a couple inches wider. I was planning to swap the thirds so I'd maintain the original track. If someone doesn't care about their tires extending outside the fenders, then yes the fj62 axle is complete and ready to go and they'd have a spare 3rd member.

If anyone is interested, pm me an offer.

yes it's wider but everything will bolt onto the FJ40 axle.. Just saying it'll help get the axle out of your garage and give someone disk brakes.. Plus the bonus is it's fine spline diff .. so to keep track width you'd need to swap knuckles and birfs.. You can use the same short side birf and inner that's in the fj62 but not the long side inner.
that will give you a spare diff, a spare short inner and disk brakes. and a huge scrap Fj62 housing.

So is it a pretty easy take the 62 axle apart and put the parts in my 40 axle? If thats the case I would be interested in it.

It's not rocket science.. I'd rebuild the knuckles with a rebuild kit at the same time. call it done. since your going to have it apart it's easier to put new bearings in at the same time.

If I did it I would rebuild everything. I would only want to do it once.

iffin your doing this i'll see if I can get the knuckle setup tool back from Rob or Eric. Dangit I was just on the phone with Eric as well..

Its going to be a couple weeks I am out of town the next 3 weekends so its no rush.

Eric has it, alltough I tried to keep it

It shouldn't be too difficult. The fj40 3rd I have includes inners and birfs. The idea was that I could build a disk brake axle out of the two without having to pull my existing drum brake axle to scavenge parts. That way you can build it in the garage, then swap out the entire unit and not have to take the truck off the road for any length of time.

Update - I sold my setup to Kirk (Shotgun).
