Anyone used the SOR disc brake backing shield elimination kit?

Second full brake job in 3 years, one caliper piston seized. Same three years ago. I drive on a lot of dirt roads (VT) and surely this contributes to all the wear. I also did not use OEM calipers and discs but the best NAPA could get. Wondering if this elimination kit works or actually hurts??? Surely not good to have a tone of dirt in there but another part of me this it might create more problems.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Sean

I kept my FJ62 sheilds and air scoops on the front axle. I wheel lots of washboard roads in death valley and sierra rock crawling with no detrimental effects. People call them rock catchers but it has never happened to me in 10 years. They don't hurt anything.

If your piston seized then I would make sure to flush brake fluid more often. You probably have some water getting in there causing havoc over the years. Bleeding on a regular basis keeps the system clean and functioning well.

Thanks Randy.

I am going to leave them, just seems better to have the shield.

I bleed my brakes once a year, thinking I have turn that into more often.

bleed brakes or complete fluid flush once a year? There's a difference.

I used the trail gear eliminators. 6000 miles later and it stops great.

I bet it's more about fluid and quality of the dust boots than the backing plates.

I just cut the backing plates off and used the centre piece as a spacer
Our trails are lots of mud roots and rock
And it wasn't stuff getting caught in the sheilds that made me remove them
They kept getting bent and rubbing on the rotors

Meant a full flush every year, although I am going to try twice a year on that. My 62 doesn't get on the trails that much, but our roads are mostly dirt, including the mile hill to my house, and when things thaw, full on mud season!

Think I am going to leave the plates in place and place another year of trust in those Toyota engineers.

I had cracked soft hoses in the assembly. Didn't want to keep them.

Braided lines make the brakes feel amazing.

Have braided from body to axle but not from axle to block on backing plate. Did you replace those with braided? If I can find them, I will replace with the braided but not sure I have seen a source for that.

Yup. But I bought them from the shop that has them made and sells DOT cert brake lines with it. $80 min order, though, for shippping.

@Spike Strip

You have an original Snow Cruiser as a spare? That's very cool.

Personally, I like the eliminator rings, and it makes taking the calipers off much easier.

I don't have issue with the backers; it's how the hose ties to them I hate...if you just ran new lines to the axle straight from the calipers, you could leave the backers...
