I have some oil shooting from my tube when I'm going down the road. Stop your chuckles! Seriously though...is there a rubber grommet/fitting associated with the dipstick? It seems to fit fine but I don't know if its the original dipstick. Definitely the source and not coming elsewhere on the engine. I should mention that this was this engine's first trip on the road in some time other than just being cranked.

Have to take it to get a muffler fitted tomorrow and will see what my oil pressure guage is reading. Its just a shade tree situation as its reading but lying in the floor board. TIA, Dave

ps...did a search but couldn't find anything pertaining to dipsticks specifically

Edit--Probably should have held off on this question till I give it a 20 minute ride to the muffler shop and then posted to double check specifics. Its not blowing the dipstick up and out of the holder but a little bit. Will report on this tomorrow when I have a better chance to review.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

I've got a dipstick from my FJ45LV if you want it.

Thanks Charles...will monitor it another day. It wasn't a lot of oil (didn't change the oil level)...just a splatter and a drip at the gas station. Just get a little nervous on the initial run regarding oil (but I did install the stainless steel lines to replace the shredded originals). Dipstick appears to be correct stick. Maybe it was just the awakening of a long sleeping hog.

Changing Dip Sticks

Drove the pig about 20 miles today and got the same blow back of oil on the dip stick side (all of it on the lower end of the engine). I have an F engine I got from Chris AKA Hugh Heifer (F155) so I pulled its dip stick and it has a rubber portion.

I just got it back and had to go to work so I guess I will get some degreaser and spray on next chance, let it drip, change the oil (it is about a year old since I changed it when I first got the pig) and then run it again + check oil pan, other fittings. So........I either got a major problem or fixed a small one. No engine knock or anything. No doubt that the other dip stick is not as loosy goosey.

PS...is there a PVC valve on these things? I gotta see if I have my Haynes manual with me at work tonight since I am unfamiliar.

There has to be some form of crank case ventilation but I doubt it's routed like a modern PCV valve back to the intake.

Thank you sir! Will check on this.

my 69 has a pcv system, it heads into a spacer that goes underneath the carb.

Fair amount of pressure coming from the dip stick tube (as expected) when running but was just checking on something I thought may contribute. Gonna change out old oil tomorrow, check for pcv (if I have one) and see if I see any problems. Thanks everyone!

Sounds like the crank case ventilation is plugged somehow. Is this the original engine or a rebuild? If it's a rebuild have you used parts from various years in the rebuild? I'm not familiar with the "F/2F" engines being that I'm a diesel guy and all but sometimes the crankcase ventilation system changes from year to year, ie: valve cover to pushrod cover for example.

On my 3B it's simply a tube out the side of the pushrod cover.

Pulled the PCV and it looked really rough...O'Reilly's didn't have one so will pick up one at Advance (hopefully the right one) ASAP. Changed the oil (I had forgot how much goes in these F engines) and will crank up soon to see if I get the splatter. Will keep Cruiser's suggestion in mind too.

If I can get over this hurdle and fixing a short in the lights I am going to be a rolling pig!

Does anybody know what the shallow tray located right behind the driver's side headlight is? It has a large hole in the middle with 4 screw holes in each corner. I have a coolant bottle on the pass. side headlight so I didn't know what is supposed to be located here. The reason I ask is that it is fixed in place and my headlight wires run underneath making it a PITA to locate the possible short there. MANY THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE!!! You are all responsible for making my 55 run!!

Good luck finding a new pcv valve for your 69 F motor. I gave up and plan on adapting a later model to work. Lemme know if you find the correct one anywhere!
Meantime I soaked mine in mineral spirits for a bit and cleaned it up...seems to work for now.

I think it was smog related.

Marshall and FJ40,

The PCV looks super bad.(doubt cleaning will help this bugger)..had no idea that the 69 would be difficult to find. OReilly's and Advance a no go.......will one from years 69-71 work???? Wow had no idea. Dave is the production date of your 55 / the month.

This from SOR:
U PCV VALVE-
1958-9/69-Availability subject to stock on hand-No return on USED Parts-USED Part NOT Available at this time-Listing for reference only-DO NOT ORDER 5.00 No

030-21B PCV VALVE-
9/69-7/80 9.16 Yes

Better get ot cleaning if before 9/69...if you soak and spray cleaner through it and you get to a point where you can hear it move/rattle when you shake it by your ear then it should be good.

Dave from MAF :12204-60021 PCV VALVE E-9/69 $4.35

12204-61010 PCV VALVE 10/69-97 $3.65

Yep Eric this looks to be the one! (Thanks to you for your help!).

To end this dip stick thread with some final conclusions....the dip stick with the rubber helped tighten it up considerably, I cleaned the existing PCV with laq thinner briefly and soaked a bit with Kroil. Reinstalled and haven't seen splatter yet but will want to use my new pcv to be sure.

Will start putting some miles on it and see where I stand. Will post pics in the near future. Thanks to everybody's responses and Thanks to you too Charles for your offer of checking South of the Border on the potential for parts. Dave

There really is not anything in them to go bad, unless the PCV valve somehow gets moisture in it and it rusts up. Oil and gunk can be cleaned out with a solvent. As long as the PCV valve rattles, it should be good to go.

On the dipstick,

OEM units have the part number on the end, and these are still available new from the dealer. Yes it should have a rubber seal where it seats into the guide tube.
