did some repairs at PB cabin

Made it to PB Cabin yesterday. What a little treasure. Needs some serious TLC though. Roof leakage around the pipe, questions about the state of the fireplace, and lots of junk in there.

Nice work on the stairs and firepit, @lcwizard !

We'd definitely be up for a group clean-up day.

After that, seems a question of how much $$ do people want to put into it. But some basics, like cleaning (replacing?) the counter and sink, as well as simply adding a basic wood table or two and some chairs would go a long way.

Not sure if there's mold in there ... my wife was pretty sure based on smell but maybe it's just musty, very musty. Outhouse should also be dismantled/burned and a new one built farther from the creek. That'd be a project though.

+1 for West Clear creek, have not been down there in like 3 years but what a gorgeous area!

First time I went to West Clear Creek was 49 years ago. Went to Tramway Trail in my 69 Opel GT. Friend I went with assured me it was paved road to a parking lot. We made it to within a hundred yards of the trail head. Wouldn't mind going again. Would just require porters to carry my supplies in then supplies and me out.

Did you enter from the North or the South?

FWIW TRAL inspections of FR203 (AKA Cherry Creek Road) in October 2020 and April 2021 didn't note anything like that.

I'd like to think our people would have said something about that if it was there, but I wasn't there so I can't swear to it. I'm thinking it was moved by October 2020. @richardlillard1

The last time I was there was 9/26/20, that spot was fairly filled in, still took attention, but pretty straightforward with good line choice.

The other trucks that day opted to go high, as you did. Some higher than others:

I find this to be the perfect “slider line”; drive onto the rock, utilize the slider until the rear gets to it, then up and over, enjoy your new shiny spot on the slider. As you can see, there was a time when the lack slider would not necessarily have stopped me from choosing this line anyway. Another option would be to start off around it, then turn into the rock and use the slider to pivot the truck to passenger and get the rear tire up and over the rock. If memory serves, I decided against this because it would have involved more leanies (I do not like the leanies).

Is this spot near the South end of FR203, south of Devils Chasm or North? Have come into FR203 from the North but not all the way to Southern juncture, don’t remember seeing this obstacle.

Just north of Devil’s Chasm if memory serves. Much farther south than PB and further still than the section of the trail with all the blackberries.

There is a spot on FR203 - not this one - just north of Devil's Chasm that is dicey. There is a large boulder near the left side (if driving north) - not as large as this boulder pictured above- forcing you to go around to the right, close to the edge. Problem is you have to drive REAL close to the edge and said edge is starting to deteriorate and slope. So you have to aim for as close to boulder as possible, press the gas and hope inertia does it's job.

That boulder is going to have to be moved though, or some sort of ramp built over it before too long.

What is the rule for primitive, dispersed camping off FR203?

there are a handful of spots right off the road, particularly on the southern half. I think the same rules generally apply as everywhere else in the Forest pertaining to pack it in pack it out, currently have stage 2 fire restrictions, etc.
Tonto lifted all fire restrictions today.

It's been over a year since I brought in a sprayer and doused the inside with bleach water so i assume I should do it again. I'm working on a trailer I used
to pull behind my 40 that I parked 20 years ago. I will use it to haul back tools and supplies. The facia by the stove near replacing. The outhouse has been a
thing I wanted to address for a few years now. They ground is terribly rocky so digging a pit will be fun

Let me know when you want to go in and do some work. I'd be happy to contribute dollars and sweat to the effort. May even have a couple buddies that would be willing to lend a hand.

Hey Phil, yeah washout still on 203, but its been worn in a bit and isn't as rough as your photos now.

Thanks for reminding me about Boyer cabin, been ages since I visited.

Decided to go to PB this morning.

Fire ring and steps in good shape, major flooding from the monsoon rains has debris pulled under the cabin and the waterline is over 2ft.

But the cabin is in good shape

Dave I assume you built the pizza oven also since it's shaped to fit on the fire ring?

Found one broken stone, don't know where the second and possibly 3rd is, pizza peel is being used as a fire poker or something in the fireplace.

I spruced the place up with a Troopy, but needed it to get back home so wasn't able to leave it there

Good to know a mostly-stock Troopy makes it no problem...
