Any suggestions on how to clean up the threads in the thermostat housing?...looks like I’ve got some type of hard sealant left behind after removing the BVSVs.

Also, per this post, Jim recommends no sealant on the air rail plugs. How about the BVSV plugs, I presume something needs to be used to prevent a coolant leak?

Jim,

Ive got Mini Truck PS and removed smog components. Is your pulley necessary for my set up. Thanks in Advace...
The idler is only necessary when using a stock 79-87 Cruiser PS pump & bracket.

IOW, If the air pump is the only tensioner on the only belt that is turning the WP, then an idler is necessary.

Run a 3/8NPT tap in the hole, just enough to clear the threads.

Use regular teflon pipe dope, as intended for any interference thread in a liquid-tight application.

Jim -

My wife is getting mad that my 60 is taking up her spot in the garage.

I know you are a very busy guy. Any luck on a eta time on my carb/dizzy? Its been a few months.

Any information/call/email/PM would be great.

Thanks

:)

Nic, finishing the carb now. It was dirty and slightly bent, but no major problems.
Dissy tests OK, just needs recurved now.

Thanks Jim!

Question for you.....Those two gaskets that go between the manifold and the spacer plate and from the spacer plate to the carb....Are you suppling new ones for me or do i need to get them from SOR or do you sell them?

Thanks and can't wait to get my carb/dizzy back!

:)

There is no separate gasket between carb and isulator and manifold. The insulator has gasket material epoxied to the face of the insulator. It is not designed to be scraped off. The FSM says inspect insulator and gasket.
If gasket looks OK, then reinstall.
If gasket is messed up because somebody glued it or tried to scrape it off, then replace insulator.

The insulator is black bakelite. The permanent gasket is tan paper. The aftermarket gaskets are black paper.

That being said, I have the gaskets and can toss 'em in the box if you want them.

That would be great!

Can i just replace the gasket on the insulator without buying a insulator? Does the new gasket also have to be epoxied on?

My insulator plate gasket came off all messed up. So i will need a new gasket there as well as the other gasket.

Sorry for the 20 questions.....I have not seen a very good diagram of how all this goes back together gasket wise.

Thanks Jim!

It's simple. There is no gasket. There is an insulator w/ gasket permanently bonded in place. If the gasket is damaged, the correct repair is replace insulator.

Some people have scraped the permanent gasket off and replaced w/ AM gasket successfully.

Many other hacks have attempted to scrape rock hard gasket & epoxy off insulator, thereby gouging soft insulator, then attempted to glue on a new gasket w/ RTV. The chewed up insulator won't seal, and RTV is dissolved by gasoline, so there are various & sundry manifold vacuum leaks.

Proceed carefully young Jedi. :)
