Ha, with 3 kids you could classify it as a chaotic science. Depending on where we're going if we say we'll be there in a half hour, its going to be 1 hour and so on. So I plan accordingly.
Hosted by the SOARA group. Been to a couple of meetings, but never joined. Good group. Actually started a General exam class, but they were using the VERY BORING ARRL book and travel took me away for a few of the classes and never ended up doing it.

I agree with the very boring ARRL book comment. That's what I've been using to study with...I'm going to do some cramming this weekend and give it a shot Monday. I'm doubtful the FCC will get back to me in time, but at least it would be done and off the list

Take these online tests until your pass rate is 90% or higher and you will have no problem taking and aceing the test in about 5 minutes. I read the ARRL book but it was taking the practice tests that made it super easy.

I agree with Dan using the free online tests. I also thought Gordon West's book was much better than that of ARRL. West's book has the questions, answers and generally some info around it. Read the quewstion, highlight the answer, then you can skim them all fairly quickly.
If you take the test and pass Monday 2.25.13, I'll bet you that you'll have your call sign before this event on 3.15.13. It's generally less than 10 days unless SOARA sits on the applications. Doubt they would tho. IIRC, you can get on the air immediately, but do have to identify yourself some way noting your status prior to receipt of your call sign. It's been several years since I took the test and don't remember exactly.
If I remember correctly, once your paper work has been accepted by the FCC and published by ARRL or QRZ.com, you can get on air. You don't have to wait for the paperwork to come in the mail from the FCC.
Here is the link for QRZ.com daily update of licenses: http://forums.qrz.com/forumdisplay.php?87-Daily-FCC-Log
Of course I may be completely wrong and someone will correct me.
Again late to the game but just throwing it out there.... Any interest in running through Red Canyon down to the Bradshaw Trail? The canyon has been on my list and from the videos i have seen it looks very cool (tight, tall canyon walls, etc). It basically starts just south of the 10 near the Paton Museum then hits the Bradshaw Trail just south of the campsite.....

This looks like it would be a better trip than how we entered in 2011. How about we all meet at the Patton museum (Chiriaco Summit exit) at 11:00? We can check out the tanks and then hit the trail.
I would like to meet up with you guys at the Patton Museum also and drive in. I have a lifted, short, length pop-up tent trailer. Do you think I would be able to follow you thru Red Canyon?

Since I actually haven't driven it i don't know for sure. There are a couple of videos on you tube and Vimeo so perhaps you can take a look and see what you think. That said I would probably not recommend taking it through the bradshaw trail out of the salton sea like we did in 2011. There were a couple of short-steep hill climbs that might cause problems for you. Just my 2 cents.
