Denso alternator deal FYI

Hey Guys...just noticed this thread was alive. Thanks Fred.

So I got that ebay alternator, it was cross listed with the early 80's Celica. So far it's working perfectly. It doesn't say "Toyota" or "Denso" but it's great quality, looks dealer "reman" quality to me...actually better. It's new.

I got a little frustrated with O'reilly's, Auto Zone, and even Napa for their vague knowledge of these units. Probably because I was already running with no alternator for 3 days! Kudos to Kirkland brand starting/deep cycle battery. So after finally ordering one from Napa, and seeing the low-buck quality of the reman unit (peeling paint, dented, cheap looking electrics) I rescinded the order. I ended up searching and cross-referencing myself out of necessity. So I ended up with that ebay listing. Just like the FJ60s, Celicas of various years had difference "clock" positions. Definitely bookmarked in my FJ60 "good to know" list.

Pierre

But enough yapping from me...here's some pics from today...

Also, since there were no part #s on box/unit, it's possible these were just mis-labeled units as the one I received looks exactly, clocking and everything, like the stock unit on my rig.

:meh:

So @cosmicdynamo - how has this held up?

I have one, but on the shelf.

Asking because it's still available as a reman from Toyota, and since the OE unit is NLA, it'd be nice to know there's a substitute with minor mods available from Mr. T.

Part # 27020-45140-84

Applications: Toyota Celica 1979-1981, GT, LT, Supra 4 Cyl 2.2L, 2.4L, 2.7L

Thanks again!

So far great. Super part. Now, the only part I'm not 100% sure of is the exact part number for the unit I received. I need to believe ebay lister for that. But based on the research I did on Celica alternators, it's a suitable cross-reference.

The next step with all this is to order from Mr T....then we'll confirm. But like I said, it looks like "clock" positions varied with Celicas too.

Now that I'm at a real computer, here's a pic of a 79-87 2F alternator showing how the adjuster is straight above the mount and the IC regulator is clocked away from the hot engine:

And this is the celica/minitruck alternator. Same basic guts, but adjuster ear is clocked over away from engine, limiting amount of adjustment, and regulator is on the hot engine side of alt.

But check out this 1983 Celica Supra or Cressida alternator. Ears are clocked correctly, and internal regulator is moved inside so it doesn't get in the way of heater hose. The connector is looking for IG (ignition on) and L (alt warning light) but adds one more pin for S (volt Sensing) that gets connected to battery or 12V ignition wire. This is an easier swap in that the 3FE alt.

What I learned from the stock photos used by the big parts places....can't trust them. The one I ordered from napa, with the correct clock position in the photo, was the wrong unit. Clock position was opposite. The parts guy was confused. Some part entries said 10 o'clock viewed from the rear, others 10 o'clock from the front. Lol.

Ok,
So now we need some brave soul to actually slap down $65 and buy Part # 27020-45140-84 from Toyota and come back here and settle this once and for all!

Can never trust eBay sellers attention to details regarding part numbers...

And can rarely trust Rock Auto in providing accurate product shots.

I suggest, for good of the 60/62 community, that we sacrifice a young semi old Turk to find out!

I ordered one up.....will see.

The part # in thread. but my parts guy said to call him for some reason......

The part # for the 20/22R alternator gets the 60A alternator that has the ear clocked off to the side and the VR is in the bad spot.

FWIW, The 20R alternator is a good retrofit on the F engine because:
-they both have the adjuster ear clocked over,
-the VR is facing away from the hot engine,
- upgrades from external points regulator to integral IC regulator,
-upgrades from 35A to 55A,
-easy one wire hookup.

But Jim, the OP shows the exact alt we need, even installed . .....or am I missing something?

The plot thickens!
