Ok, here is the plan for the Death Valley trip slated for November 17th thru the 20th/21st.

Nov. 17th drive to Beatty, NV meeting up in Beatty or along the way. Beatty has a few ghost towns nearby to check out including Rhyolite and Bullfrog before we find camp for the night. If anyone knows of a good spot to camp near Beatty please speak up as I do not have a specific spot in mind. I see a few RV parks and a hot springs camp near Beatty but in general I prefer backcountry camping spots.

Nov. 18th from Beatty head down Titus canyon to the main road where we will hang a right and go past Ubehebe crater on the way to the Racetrack. We’ll stop along the way and check out points of interest such as Leadville, Ubehebe crater and whatever else we find interesting. I would think if we leave early enough we should have no problem eating lunch at Ubehebe before taking the long washboard road to the Racetrack. Camp 2nd night at Homestake camp.

Nov. 19th from Homestake we will either go down Lippincott grade or around Hunter Mtn to Saline Valley depending on weather, road conditions and what we want to see. From Saline we will head to Panamint and on up to Wildrose and the Charcoal Kilns. We can either spend the 3rd night in Wildrose campground, Thorndike or Mahogany Flat.

Nov. 20th this is a day to either head home or if people want to stay another night find another area to explore. There is still a lot to see and do.

Park rules state that backcountry overnight group size is limited to 15 people and 6 vehicles. Larger groups need to split up and camp at least 1 mile apart. For this reason I am keeping the group limited to 6 vehicles. The current list I have from the previous DV thread and from PM’s is:

Dan2722
Open spot
Brentbba
Open spot
1FZj80
shakotankei

As we all know people change plans so if you think you may not be able to make this trip please reply to this thread and allow the person on standby to take your place.

A few notes about the trip and Death Valley: (I know most of this is common sense to everyone but I have to state the obvious)

Communication – please have at least a CB or better yet a 2M radio. It is a lot more fun to talk to the group while driving and is a piece of safety equipment.

Extra fuel – it is best to bring along extra fuel in Death Valley. Between Beatty and Panamint we will cover between 130 – 150 miles depending on side trips with no gas stations nearby. I plan on bringing 2 Scepter cans.

Weather – be prepared for extreme temp swings with possible snow, rain, wind storms etc. The last time I camped at the Racetrack the temp swung from 85 during the day to 17 at night.

Water – bring plenty it is Death Valley.

This trip should be a blast with lots to see and something I have been looking forward to for 2 years since the last time I was in DV.

Sounds good to me.

Sorry I guess I read this post too late. Earlier this month I was also planning a Death Valley trip, except it'll be during Thanksiving Nov.22 to Nov.25th. I'm relatively new to off-roading and I live in NorCal. Anyone else interested?

Dan - for headcount purposes Scott (Gon2srf) will be riding shotgun in my truck. If he misbehaves, I carry extra ratchet straps and he'll ride on top of the trailer! ;)

Looking forward to this - 2006 for me and 1988 for Scott were our last visits to DV.

We'll be "somewhere" in the upper portion of the region around that time.

Keep an eye out for an old Pig, an 80 and a 4 runner

Awesome! Glad that Scott will be able to make it.

Anyone on the board know of a good spot to camp outside of Rhyolite maybe in the Bullfrog hills? If it's a secret and you don't want to put it up for everyone to see PM me.

Looking for a nice quite spot the first night.

For anyone that wants to caravan up on the 17th a couple of us will be meeting at the Cajon Junction (Hwy 138 exit) McDonald's between 9:30 - 10:00. This is about halfway up the Cajon pass on the I-15.

Looks like we may have some weather this weekend that could drop some snow so if you have tire chains I recommend bringing them.

Posted on that thread - I vaguely remember that tight turn from 6 years ago. Wonder if it's doable with the trailer?

BTW - chains are out on the workbench ready to go.

Arthroscopic surgery on the righ knee went well Tuesday afternoon. Shaved off the piece of cartlidge doing the damage and cleaned up a torn meniscus. Cross your fingers that I'll be good to go the 17th. I may not be doing any longer walks to sites and may need help getting wood off my roof rack, but I'll be damned if I'm going to miss this. Sutures come out next Wednesday and unless Dr. says no way, I'm going! Pic of the bandage Tuesday night.

Ouch! No worries we will help get the wood off your rack for a glass of wine. :D

I'm thinking the better option will be to go over Hunter Mtn. than down Lippincott with the trailers. I actually would prefer the Hunter Mtn route just for the scenery and interests along the way.

Ordered a set of the Rud Grip 4x4 chains from these guys so will have those before we go.

Hopefully will not need chains.

I've had one set for years. I know from Dave's runs that a set for the trailer would be advisable, but will do without for this trip.

Either Lippencott or Hunter is fine. Both are beautiful and the later is less risky with the trailers. I'd hate to run into uphill traffic on the grade as there's no place to pass!

I will have plenty of  and wood. I'll put as much on my rack as I'm capable of and given what I've currently got here at home, that'll be at least two nights worth. I get all the wood free. I'll have the fire pit on the trailer too for our use.

JohnGalt had to drop out for this trip so there is an open slot if anyone is interested. Shoot me a pm or respond to this thread and I will add you. Looks like the weather is shaping up to be really nice.

John we will catch you on the next trip.

I'm in for the open slot. I need to confirm a few schedule issues and can confirm 100% by end of day.

Hows the weather looking for the trip? We still ok to bring trailers? I don't own chains should I be getting 2 sets?

Weather is looking good at this point. Temps in the 60's to 70's during the day and down to as low as the 20's and 30's at night.

There was some rain and possibly snow on Hunter Mtn on Friday so if you can get chains it is recommended. I only have one set as that was all I could afford at this time but I am not pulling a trailer. I think Brent only has one set and he will be bringing his trailer.

The Death Valley morning report shows Hidden Valley road, which we will take over Hunter Mtn, as having severe washouts from rains with high clearance 4x4 vehicles required. What severe means to the park service I am not sure but we will see when we get there.
