...But sad too, it is "Death Valley" and when not given the proper respect, bad things happen. This incident (involving wayward German tourists) is worth reading and extremely interesting if you know the local terrain. So, if you have 4 hours or so...

The Hunt for the Death Valley Germans

Everybody, stop what you are doing right now and go read this.

Yeah, Tom Mahood is a good story teller. Not related to DV, but here's another of his adventure hunting trips that makes for a good read:

The Hunt for 928

Read it a long time ago. Just the logistics of the recovery alone should give people pause about hiking in the area.

So are we ever going to arrive at Saline Hot Springs?

Pablo has to get back from SnT.

He'll need to recover from the food coma first.

I can imagine. The meat overdose and continuous force feeding of more and more meat, made me feel like a human fois gras goose.

That was some durned good charcoochitree they was servin' up!

:hillbilly:

OK wrong thread.

I assume some serious Mac and Cheese too!!!

Only if the pasta was handmade and the cheese locally sourced from ethically tortured free range goats.

Almost...
but yes, two pans were had and they were uh..MAZE-ing.

so yeah, back to the last 100 yards into Saline.
We passed some folks on a vision quest hike about a mile from the springs.
The first guy is wearing a dress thing, flip flops and a stick in his hand like some kind of shaman wannabe or shepperd. I'm pretty sure by the time I passed him his Chi was deflected and positive vibes were not what he was encountering.
There were four or five others in the group and 2 were very scantily clad young girls who were absolutely feeling the positive vibes.

comments were made on the 2M and beers were within spitting distance, so we set up to the east of the main warm springs about 100 yards away.

our itinerary was such that we got to stay put here for 2 nights.
Night #1 had greeted us with the wind, or "w" word as we would call it.
there were mentions of the local burros, and the leather dudes that were omnipresent as well.

See, the burros love to walk around camp after everyone has checked into bed for the night and alert you of their presence. I was really hoping it wouldn't be my rig, since I was the closest to the tubs. But sure enough, as if on cue, they found our neighbors to the south and let them have a loud "hee haw" but it was much more annoying sound than that.

We stared at the light and shadows crossing the Inyo Mountain range and the hills just to our north across the wash until the stars came out.
Steve found the first satellite as I recall. Seeing the milky way as a wide white swatch of stars is pretty amazing.

I found that first night at the springs very relaxing. No pressure about the next day, and the toughest decision was when to go looking for the cabin the next day. We'll need to stay there 2-3 days next time!

Was this the night Tom made those awesome Salmon Cakes?
And Peach Pie Dessert?

And how about the weird dude with the wings tattooed on his chest? A creeper for sure. Onur and he hit it off.

The topless young hippy chicks passed into history, unfortunately, but were fondly remembered.

Tom made the great salmon cakes (from the coho salmon we caught in Alaska). The wind wasn't actually that bad?
