I have a 77 FJ40 that has never given me any electrical issues until now. I have some of it sorted out but don't have any gauges. I have checked fuses and grounds but not sure how to check the plug into the gauge cluster. Any tips? Wiring looks factory with no butchering.

Coolerman's wiring diagrams and parts

So did you use a meter to actually check the fuse - they can easily look good but be bad. Then there is power across the fuse - 30 cal bore brush will clean the contacts. The back side of the fuse block often gets corroded or connections get loose.

With the wiring diagram you should be able to figure out the pins and what they should read, voltage/ohms sort of measurements

I used a multi meter and I have the FSM. I removed the fuse box and cleaned it up on both sides. I tried to detect voltage on the plug at the wire at the plug but had no luck so I thought I was doing something wrong. I have voltage at every spot on the fuse box and have checked every fuse with the ohm meter, I did have a bad one that looked good.

Ok. So inspect every crimp connection carefully. Corrosion can crawl under the insulation and ruin the electrical connection.
You should test the wires for conductivity end to end - maybe there is a break in the wire not letting power thru.

If you don't have power to the Ammeter, check your fusible link at the battery.

Imagine if @Coolerman got paid for all his past efforts.

I have the FSM and the schematic and a multi meter. I have a box

My ammeter works and my cruiser runs but I don't have fuel oil pressure or temperature

Looks like your reverse lights shouldn't be working right now either.

That all would point back to the fuse, or a connection around it.

It's off of the same fuse your gauges are.

Double check that fuse, and the connection behind it.
Thanks, I will do it again. I noticed that it was the same fuse and checked it out but will be more meticulous this time.

I had a similar issue on my 76 with just the fuel gauge. It would intermittently stop working which sucks on a gas pig like an FJ40. Checked everything and couldn't find a culprit. Cleaning connections and ground points didn't seem to do anything either. In desperation I ran a dedicated ground wire from the speedometer housing to the body and this somehow did the trick for me even though the mounting screws were already very clean and should have ben grounding properly. Hope it's that easy for you, these old rigs are crazy sometimes, good luck. 👍

Thanks, I started over and removed the fuse box and took the Dremel and cleaned up everything. It works now. Thanks everyone it's usually the small things.

Thanks I appreciate it. I went back over everything and now it works.
