I'm trying to do a little pre-planning for my dash and wanted to post it here for people to look over in case I'm missing something I need to make room for. My current layout will need to include space for the following:

  • Rear window switch - up/neutral/down
  • Rear heater - on/off
  • Headlights - knob, pull to turn on, twist for dash light dimmer with full twist turning on dome lights. brights on blinker lever. I actually have no idea if this is how the LC was set up, that's just what I'm used to.
  • Reverse lights - off/on/reverse
  • Wipers - did the LC have a single knob for wiper activation and wiper fluid? Help on how this was set up would be appreciated
  • Winch - In/neutral/out
  • ARB switches x 3 (compressor, front locker, rear locker)
  • Veg tank switches x 3 (aux/main, filter selector, fuel return selector)
  • Cigarette lighter (will actually just be a power port)
  • Hazards
  • A/C controls - this is 3 small knobs that I purchased with the restomodair unit
  • Stereo
  • A/C vents
  • Ignition
That's all I have planned. Anything I'm forgetting to make space for hear?

Hazard switch?

I’m talking to these guys to order some Contura hazard switches: http://otrattw.com maybe if enough of us ask he’ll get some i.

Lol, I realized I hadn't put a hazard switch and came back to add it to find you guys were already on top of it. Hazard switch added.

Btw J Mack, I'm pretty sure I'm going with otrattw for the switches

What about off road lights? maybe a switch for more back up lights.

Are you going to use the stock switches and then add some rockers, sorta like what I'm doing.

The hazard switch is the one in red.

Thank you Ron! I don't have current plans for off road lights, but i do have some back up lights i'm installing with the plan of having a switch for on/off/reverse (not sure how to wire that, but surely it can be done). I'll add that. I initially planned front bumper fogs and roof rack off road lights, but am now thinking i'm going to leave those off for the sakes of simplicity and expedience.

BTW, what is the width of your center section? It will be a this weekend before I see the cruiser again, and the width will allow me to do a drawing to scale to see what kind of space i have to work with.

Almost forgot your question. I'm going to be going mostly otrattw rockers I think. Will use stock knobs for headlights and wipers, rockers for everything else, though hazards are up in the air. May go stock there as well.

My thinking is vents on the outsides of the dash including where the ignition currently is. 2 vents and ac controls at the bottom of the center section like yours, then the upper part of the center section will have a 7 inch touch screen for a double din stereo/gps. This will be my one conceit to modern technology but with the introduction of apples carplay technology to link my iphone to my car stereo, I have to do it :P. On each side of the stereo will be 2 rows of 3 switch/knobs.

I would also like to extend the drivers side window vent section down and put lights and or winch toggle over there. The lights, because that's where i'm used to lights being, winch toggle so i can reach in the window to run the winch if needed.

Now that is just flat out helpful J Mack. Thanks.

I came on here to post this mock up (attached pdf) that I had made but it is nowhere near to scale which of course means I have no idea if things will actually fit.

Don't know all the sizes or what the scale of your pdf is, but the vents are 4.5"x2.25", the radio is 6"x9.6" and the rectangular switches are contura 5's which are 1.91" x 1.02"

I feel like i'm trying to cram in too much, but not sure how else to do it

Tuffmudder,

Without running to the shop, I think the center is @ 17". Dash looks good. If too tight, maybe some can go in the console.

Thanks J Mack. I'll retry my mock up with your scale tomorrow.

Ron, are you talking about putting switches in the console between the seats, or am I just misunderstanding?

Yes, I thought it might be a good place for certain switches, lockers, comp., etc. Free up space on the dash. I've been thinking about putting the ignition in the tuffy box, also. I lost the place for it, when I put in the ac vent.

Have you considered Just adding a tab to the right of the steering wheel for the ignition? I do like the idea of some switches in the console. The ARB switches and veg oil switches would be ok there and that would REALLY open up my dash.

What Tuffy Box did you go with and how well did it fit between the seats? I'm going to go with a model that has the front radio compartment and put a ham radio in it.

J Mack, I'd appreciate a heads up if otrattw's ends up stocking the hazards. I'm a little torn on which I prefer, so I may end up with the stock knob

My hazard switch is 38 years old and like everything else in my blinker circuit was pissing me off about twice a month when my blinkers would $hit the bed so my plan is to modernize the wiring, switches, fuses, plugs and lights all at once with readily available parts and leave the finicky OEM stuff for the purest.

Another thing to think about while you’re this far in is a wiper delay, the factory switch is high / low and washer.

Yeah, I ripped out every piece of wire in my land cruiser, so all the wiring will be new. I suppose I should have said stock'ish on the hazard knob as I wont actually be putting the original back in, just something similar. Then again, but the time I get to that who knows.

I've attached the new dash layout very close to scale though I'm off in a couple of area's but not by much. I had to remove the ARB and veg oil switches. My options are:
  1. extend the center section down further (will have to see if i have room) and create a row between the radio and ac vents
  2. Adding them inside the center console - Ron, have you worked out where in your console? I haven't even bought a Tuffy box yet to look at, so not sure how big a feat that will be
  3. Add a center overhead console - this is by far my favorite idea, however, since I'm doing a bedliner interior, theres not a headliner to hide the wiring, so I doubt I'll do this.
I'm going to print out the layout and go take a look tonight to see if any other ideas occur

Since your radio is in the dash, you could use the radio space on the Tuffy for the extra switches. Overhead would be cool and you could hide the wires in the roof support frames. That's what I'm planning on doing for the dome lights, CB, etc.

I had a look at the inside of my pig tonight and had forgotten how easily wires can be hidden and routed around the edge of the roof. I'm pretty sure I'm going to ahead and do an overhead switch console for ARB and Veg switches. In fact, looking at the potential for hiding cables, I think i'm going to add back my off road roof rack lights and put switches for them there as well!

As for the Tuffy, I think I'm going to put a Ham radio in the radio section of the console.

Ron, what width Tuffy were you able to get between your seats? Is it a tight fit or room to spare?
