Back to the OP’s topic. I’ve thought about making one of these too. It’s on my to do list the next time I have my dash out. Along with about a dozen other things. The tricky part will be finding good mounting points, designing it so it doesn’t block the defrost vents and has enough space to add mounts.

Apparently there is no dash bar......

Strictly for reference purposes... Pic of the grab bar for later model years dash. Has to clear the airbag deploying.

IIRC, we determined that there aren't any R or L garb bars, you just turn it over and it fits the other side. I made a small desk that fits on the bar for use in camp. Not for the road, though, as an airbag deployment with it in place would leave you with a wooden expression...

I am envisioning your passenger wheeled into the emergency room to have a go-pro, a tablet, a phone, a GPS unit, a soda bottle and a coffee cup removed from their face after an airbag deployment.

Obviously you’ve wandered from the 55 section

Sadly Pigs don't occupy as much of my time or my shop as they used to. :( In fact my '80s have seen more trail time the last couple of years than my 40 even!

Mark (Still The First Knight, damnit)... ;)

As much as my two 40’s meant to me, my 80 dominates both hands down. That’s progress!

My '80s do not even dream of ever keeping up with the '40 on a real trail. 45 inch ag tires, a V8 and 275:1 gearing (and a passenger grab bar even!) kinda move it out of their class. :) But for 90% of the trails to go camping, hunting, hiking, biking or whatever... the '80s do everything I could ask of them.

My last rig was a 1978 Dodge Ramcharger injected, np435, atlas 4speed, Ford high pinion, 14bolt all moly on 40’s. But I still like my 80 on 37’s better. 😎

I worked on something about a year ago, but sorta lost ambition on it. I could never punch holes in my dash to get the bar up on top, plus with the airbags, etc. I needed to do something different. I was planning on a bar that followed the edges of the lower-middle dash. It mounted to where the console screws to the metal framework on each side of the trans tunnel and then I was going to attach it to the screws inside the useless cubby or something else. Probably not going to ever finish it up, but when I did have it installed for mock up, it was really nice to have plenty of places to attach things. Terrible pics for reference.

All of you whining about airbags (@greentruck @Mark W and @therestofyouwhonoddedwhenyoureadthat) should probably go disconnect them. Seriously. They're way old and every bit as likely to injure you as help you.

Because this thread hasn't been derailed quite far enough yet...

This is your solution if you want to keep it "toyota." If you want jeep accessories, sell your 80.

(otherwise, this thread is highly entertaining while remaining "tech-enough")

While some of my comments were of a derailing nature, I do not consider comments about airbag concerns to be irrelevant.
Or I didn't... Now however... I am gonna run over to the shop and rip those deadly bastards out of my dash tonight! Thanks for the tip!!! ;)

Airbags save lives, people.

Don't be stupid.

Oops... the switch was left open...the trucks are off the rails... Trainwreck imminent! :nailbiting:
