Hey everyone

I have a 86 60 series 2H manual

I bought this off a bloke who hydolocked it and bent a rod...easy! All back together again with no problems... but it won't start, I have started it once being jumped off another 4x4 and spraying ether down the throat!

Things I've checked/ replaced:
Compression - excellent

Glows - Manual glow setup installed and gets f$&king hot

Diesel in the pots - bled it up multiple times by the old fashion way and pulling out glow plugs and cranking over

Replaced primer and put a kit through it
Replaced diaphragm
Checked for vac leaks and fuel leaks
Stripped back harness for any crappy wires
Its chewed through 2 batteries
Oil relief valve clean and free
new rings and mains ( during the motor build up of course )

I can't think what else could be wrong and I don't want to keep throwing money at it as it was only meant to be a cheap fix and drive car
Ready to roll it off a cliff

Please help brains trust

Cheers

towstart it

Ok so it does start but not with the starter :flipoff2:
maybe faulty starter? if you towstart is the rest (idling, accelerating, driving etc) fine?
And when at operatig temp does it start with starter immediately after shut down (to eliminate air leak, eliminate faulty glow)?
edic arm moving to correct position? (overinject, run, stop)
do you have a video of starting and the sounds/exhaust fumes?

maybe hydroloco is not the only thing wrong, and shame on you being in Australia and asking other worlds to start a diesel :slap: :smokin:

Nah it does start with the starter...just takes about quarter can of ether,

Once it's started its fine, idles okay, runs etc etc

EDIC is fine too moves from stop to over inject and then back to run, turns off

But no after I turn it off it won't start again.

To be honest, this is the first time I haven't been able to work it out... hence my sign up with this forum today... haha

we get more members that way...

Weird that after it starts with ether it stays running and all. This means everything is up to snuff timing wise and all. I had a similar issue with my truck after rebuild. It started and wouldn't stay running I had to keep on priming while she tried to run. It was the simplest damn thing! The small hose connecting to the fuel leak rail was not properly seated and allowed air to get sucked into the fuel. I was able to find it because I could hear a tiny hiss of sorts. Sound like u have the tiniest air leak preventing it from starting. At least I would give that a look as well. Good luck with it.

Would there be any chance the PO could of thrown it out of timing when he hydrolocked it? I've never heard of a gear timed motor being " forced " out of time but hey...at this point I'm looking at ANYTHING lol

Engine side of the leak off hose, looks bit fingered?!

Most starting issues with HJ60 are air in fuel related, see mongoose2231 comment.
So that hose might also point in that direction, I don't know if an engine with bad timing can still run and sound ok (provide video)

that hose must be your problem, probably, maybe :bounce:

What I read about are tiny (some unvisible) leaks in soft line, hard line, before or after water sedimenter, sometimes only when driving uphill.

Maybe there is no other solution than to start checking before and after sedimenter or even start closer to the engine with an extra fuel tank, also the starter fluid ether seems bad for the cylinders but maybe that is a hoax.

I had pinholes in my water sedimenter but never problems, also maybe because the sedimenter was filled with diesel/oil residue:

And in this video they hydrolock and drive away, no timing issue (?)
