We did. We are officially metric since 1971. But since one backward nation in the world (well 3 actually as the global superpowers that are Liberia and Myanmar still use it) we are more or less passively forced to use it still.
 
I do remember in grade school when the change happened, it seemed very cool. Then the next year, back to slugs and fathoms

It'd be like learning a new language at this point, but using a base 10 system for, uh everything, sure seems easier, but what do i know...

TN DOT tried metric for a few years, but no one would actually learn it so they converted everything to standard, did their work, and then converted it back. The rounding errors got a little ridiculous and so they just went back to rods and chains...
