I'm in the process of a front end adventure and needed some CV input.

The FSM specifies some procedures for determining whether or not your axle and CV joints are in spec and has a nice illustration with some arrows indicating movement.

What's a straightforward way to determine whether or not my original CVs are in spec/don't need to be replaced? My brother in law suggested the ol' "grab each end and twist and let your gut tell you" but I'd prefer something a little more technical based off of the community's experience.

Thanks!

For me there are a few things:

1. Did it make noise when installed? A bad CV will "click" as it turns. This is normally very noticeable while driving.
2. Do the splines on either end show any noticeable wear? You can tell because the teeth will be ground away slightly where they interface with the female splines in the other components in the diff/hub.
3. Is the snap ring area worn? You need a very close fit with the snap ring, otherwise you'll saw the spline teeth away over time.
4. Are the boot weeping or cracked?

If you don't see/notice any of the above, you're all good.

Your brother in-law is right. The FSM is a good procedure to use in addition to what @suprarx7nut has outlined above. If any rotation play the CV are worn. To much and the clicking may start. Some rotational play is to be expected with age. But new OEM have zero rotational play (arrows in FSM).

Here's some pictures of axle teeth and hub flange

BTW: FSM states both inner and outer snap rings are non reusable.

I'm in Centennial and have both on-hand along with the differential side oil seals. Just in case you don't have. Now that I think about I've front drive shafts, hub flanges, ball joints and about ever part you could possible need working in that area. PM me if you need something.
