CV Boot Clamps (McMaster-Carr) - The good ones

Those look much better than the clamps that need a tool. I just couldn't clamp those tight enough. I'm using the standard hose clamps with the slots that dig into the rubber; however I lined the clamps with a vacuum belt. No leaks so far with every bit of maximum lift up front. That being said i'd prefer these clamps.

Here is the back side of the worm screw fitting as requested.

No one has shown interest in taking the whole lot off my hands and I am extremely busy right now so lets just run this as a 1st come - 1st serve for the 19 sets I have. I really don't want to split these up into 1 or 2 piece orders.

I'll send you 6 clamps (3 of each size) for an even $20. Price far undercuts the prices I have seen for the Marine store clamps and you don't even have to leave the comfort of your own garage to get them.

PM me if you want in. I have 19 (6 band) kits that I can ship tonight.

Also, Mods if you want me to move this over to Storefront, say the word...

Btw...lets keep this a tech tread. I'll post a sell thread to the clamp kit in the Storefront section and link over to it.

Any other questions about the clamps?

My driver's side CV boots were intact when I started this whole thing but tonight I went out and inspected them and found that the outer boot small band was snapped in half. I din't want to pull the axle as there was still grease inside the boot. I was thinking that I would have to buy a secondary grease gun as I have read that you should not use NLGI #2 on the CVs (I may be wrong on but I didn't want to take any chances). Anyway, I headed to the auto parts store looking for a grease gun and a needle fitting so that I could get under the boot. Once I got there I found this:

Super cheap, easy to fill, slides efforlessly under the boot, and costs about $2. I would highly reccomend picking one up.

Also, through trial and error I have come to the conclusion that a Dremel is the best tool for removing the large OEM yellow clamps. The metal is kind of thick and I didn't have any luck cutting it with household wire cutters. I noticed that the yellow bands have a raised portion that is crimped in place to hold tension. This is a great place to let the Dremel work it's magic. As long as you keep a steady hand, the blade stays far enough away from the boot. Here are some pictures that show the crimped portion of the band along with a back side view of the same area so you can get a good idea of how it comes apart after you make the cut.

The small bands are easy to take off. All you have to do is pull the tab wings up with a screw driver to relieve tension and then bend it back against it's fold to open the whole thing up. Once this is complete, wire cutters will easily cut them.

Since my stock small sided bands are still good and intact. Should I just put this band over them or should I replace the stock ones with these? I am only getting minor weeping around the boots. Keep in mind this weeping is happening on a stock ride height truck. I will be installing OME torsion bars and 865 springs this weekend. Thank you for your impute guys.

Update on my hose clamps. I recently purchase some of the hose clamps with smooth inside and the rolled edges. I replaced the standard hose clamps that I had installed over the stock ones with these. I have since found out that you do not want to install hose clamps over the stock ones. If you do they will weep and leak. So I removed the stock ones and installed these new ones. So far everything looks good, no leaking.

I think you found this out already but DO NOT put these bands over the stock ones. They can't tighten up a leaking OEM band.

Everyone else, I started a sell thread in the Merchandise Storefront section. You can find it here:

Thanks for looking out for the group on this one.

I would say.....these look just like the large version of every clamp I've seen used on German cars. I even have the special 6mm and 7mm drivers from Stahlwille that usually fit this style clamp.

Tool link

I have to believe they are available from lots of parts houses for German cars. Just need to know what size to pick up.

Thanks again.

Edit:

They are available here, for example:

Norma Hose Clamp Link 100-120mm

Yep, these are made in Germany and can be tightened using a 7mm driver or a flat blade screwdriver.

Anyone have one of the smaller clamps available they might be willing to ship? I just need one so far and would like to see if it helps. My boots are all original with a ton of miles, but if I can get even 1,000 or so miles out of the axle I would be happy!
